Francesco De Gregori returns to explore the less-travelled corners of his own catalogue. On Friday 16 October comes “Nevergreen (Perfette sconosciute)”, the new live album collecting 17 tracks recorded during the series of concerts held between 29 October and 23 November 2024 at the Teatro Out Off in Milan. A project that overturns the usual logic of celebratory concerts, favouring songs that have stayed on the margins of the setlist over the big classics that have defined the Roman singer-songwriter's career.
The record, available digitally, as a double CD and double vinyl, captures the intimate atmosphere of those performances, with post-production work kept to an absolute minimum. “Nevergreen will be a record with very little post-production,” De Gregori explained when presenting the project last May. “I hear a lot of concerts that sound like records, with pre-recorded sequences; this is a record that sounds like a concert. I've always made my live albums this way.”
The idea behind “Nevergreen” is to revive songs that, while part of De Gregori's artistic history, have often been left out of his live shows. From “The Madmen” to “The Girl and the Mine”, from “San Lorenzo” to “L'uccisione di Babbo Natale”, the selection spans different eras of his output, offering an alternative perspective on one of the most important catalogues in Italian singer-songwriter music.
But the project is also a deliberate stance against the ever-more-imposing scale of live shows. “These concerts of mine are meant as a counterpoint to this chase after big numbers. I notice that even the papers keep talking about who's filling stadiums, who's filling arenas,” the singer-songwriter observed. A statement that sums up his desire to rebuild a closer relationship with the audience, letting the songs themselves, rather than the spectacle of the staging, take centre stage.
The same Milan run also gave rise to the documentary “Francesco De Gregori. Nevergreen”, directed by Stefano Pistolini, which chronicles those evenings and the musical encounters that marked them. Among the guests who shared the stage with De Gregori are Jovanotti, Elisa, Malika Ayane and Zucchero.
The album's release precedes a new series of theatre dates built around the same format. From 27 October to 15 November De Gregori will headline a residency at the Teatro Sala Umberto in Rome, while from 25 November to 22 December he will return to the Teatro Out Off in Milan, the very venue where the record was taped. A return to the intimate dimension of the concert that, in the singer-songwriter's intentions, aims to rescue his lesser-known songs from the oblivion of standard setlists, giving them room and a fresh chance to be heard.
