US magazine Consequence has embarked on a "mission impossible," namely what we might call "the ranking of rankings": the 100 greatest bands of all time. "Human beings are social creatures, and the band is one of the most ingenious forms of collective expression we've ever invented," writes Wren Graves, Consequence's editor-in-chief, in the introduction. "When we're part of a group, we try to communicate, and we often fail, stumble, and innovate. And, with a bit of luck, we manage to conjure up something invisible: an alchemy, a presence, a ghost on stage that doesn't appear when we're alone." Consequence had previously enlisted over two hundred artists and musicians to compile its rankings of the greatest performers of all time: the most iconic singers, guitarists, bassists and drummers in the history of modern music. With this new ranking, they celebrate instead the 100 best bands, drawing on contributions from more than 70 artists, including 16 Grammy winners and several Rock and Roll Hall of Famers. The final list was then compiled and curated by Consequence's editorial staff.
The criterion adopted to define a "band" is "a group with a relatively stable lineup, at least for a certain period, whose members contributed original musical ideas, released records under their own name, and played live."
So here's the complete ranking, from No. 100 to No. 1, of the greatest bands of all time, according to Consequence (full feature here)
