Fleetwood Mac: “The Chain,” the band's first official documentary, coming to TV

22-10-2026

The story of Fleetwood Mac told for the first time by its own protagonists, between worldwide success, tensions, tormented love affairs and break-ups. It's called "Fleetwood Mac: The Chain", the new documentary produced by Apple Original Films, which will debut on Apple TV on January 29, 2027, to coincide with the celebrations for the fiftieth anniversary of "Rumours", one of the most celebrated and best-selling albums in the history of rock.

Directed by Frank Marshall, a five-time Oscar-nominated director and producer, the film is the first documentary on the band made with its full authorization. Retracing over half a century of musical and personal events are the members themselves of the group's most famous line-up: Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Through exclusive interviews, testimonies and previously unseen archive footage, the documentary reconstructs the extraordinary trajectory of a band that has sold over 220 million records worldwide, despite the constant conflicts that marked its existence.
The chosen title is no coincidence. "The Chain", one of the signature tracks on "Rumours", is in fact the only song on the album credited to all five members of the line-up. A track that perfectly represents the unbreakable, yet often troubled, bond between musicians capable of turning their own emotional and personal crises into songs destined to go down in history.

The story begins with the 1974 meeting that led Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks to join the British core of Fleetwood Mac, radically changing the band's fortunes. From that moment on, the band would experience extraordinary success, culminating precisely with "Rumours", released in 1977 and now one of the best-selling albums of all time. Behind that consecration, however, lay relationships on the verge of collapse, internal clashes and tensions that would follow the musicians for decades.
"Fleetwood Mac: The Chain" explores precisely this contradiction: how five such different personalities, often in open conflict, managed to create one of the most fortunate musical alchemies in the history of rock. The documentary moves through legendary recording sessions, record-breaking tours, break-ups and subsequent reconciliations, up to the most recent developments in the band's story. Particular weight is also given to the testimony of Christine McVie, who passed away in November 2022.

Produced by The Kennedy/Marshall Company and White Horse Pictures, the film's producers also include Nigel Sinclair, already involved in music documentaries such as "The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years" and "No Direction Home: Bob Dylan". The screenplay is credited to Mark Monroe.
The documentary adds to Apple Original Films' catalogue dedicated to great figures of music and entertainment, which includes, among others, "Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me" and "Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie". For Fleetwood Mac, it will above all be the chance to tell, from the inside, a one-of-a-kind artistic story in which the line between music and private life has often been impossible to draw.
