Editors are back with a new album. The band led by Tom Smith will release "Surface, Echo & Sound" on October 30th, the British outfit's eighth studio effort and their first record since 2022's "EBM". The announcement comes alongside the single "The Rush", released together with a video shot in Tokyo and directed by Henry Ehara (see below).
After the electronic turn of "EBM", made with the involvement of Benjamin John Power, better known as Blanck Mass, Editors chose to shift perspective once again. In the summer of 2025 the band gathered in Stafford to write and develop the new material in the rehearsal room, returning to a collective working method reminiscent of their early career. It's a more direct, organic approach, far removed from the largely studio-bound dimension that had defined their recent records.
Smith too helped steer the project's sound toward greater essentiality. As with his solo album "There Is Nothing In The Dark That Isn't There In The Light", the singer built many of the new songs starting from acoustic guitar. "It was a very productive summer," the frontman recalled, thinking back on the sessions held in the Gloucestershire countryside: "⟦Q1⟧"
"The Rush", the first taste of the record, revolves around an imagined conversation between two people sitting at a bar, reflecting on the best and worst moments of existence. Smith explained that the theme of mutual support and the comfort found in the people closest to us runs through much of his songwriting and stands as one of the throughlines of the whole album. On the track the singer also plays mandolin, an instrument that plays a significant role in the record's sonic palette. Guitarist Justin Lockey, who also handled recording and production, explained that the mandolin is used unconventionally, as a timbral element able to cut through the mix and help build the rhythms alongside acoustic guitar and drums.
