ROBYN - Sexistential

2026 (Young)
dance-pop, electro-pop

Robyn has always been something of an anomaly in pop. Too emotional for the mainstream machine, too pop for the more austere strains of art-pop. Yet it's precisely within this tension that she's built one of the most recognizable languages of the last twenty years, all pulsing synths and melodies capable of turning emotional wreckage into dancefloor energy.

After “Honey” (2018), a record suspended between grief and club catharsis, the Swedish artist returns with “Sexistential”, a short album (nine tracks, under half an hour) that works more as an emotional laboratory than as a definitive statement.

Personal context weighs heavily here. During her years of silence, the singer went through the end of a long relationship, motherhood via IVF, and a broader redefinition of the relationship between desire, love and autonomy. All of this enters the record not as a linear confession, but as a constellation of moments: sex, irony, biological anxiety, chemical euphoria, domestic loneliness. Nothing is resolved. Everything coexists.

Musically, “Sexistential” marks a small return to the electronic sharpness of “Body Talk” (2010), filtered through the more fluid sensuality of “Honey”. The production by Klas Åhlund – a longtime collaborator – builds precise synthetic structures that are nonetheless riddled with small fractures: bright arpeggios, jittery drum-machines, glitches that run through the songs like emotional interference. It's dance-pop, but with something restless beneath the surface, like an electronic nervous system that pulses, contracts and contradicts itself.

If there's a limit to “Sexistential”, it's its scale. Nine tracks fly by quickly and at times leave the impression of a smaller project than the ideas would suggest (after eight years of waiting, that quirk can feel almost frustrating). Then again, perhaps it's exactly this brevity that makes “Sexistential” feel so alive. It's not a pop monument. It's more like a fragment of life captured as it happens: confused, aroused, at times unmanageable. Robyn doesn't try to turn this emotional chaos into a perfect anthem, but lets it stay a little messy, singing right through that mess anyway. Cool, vulnerable, self-deprecating. Still surprisingly human.
