HELADO NEGRO, REYNA TROPICAL - Helado Tropical

2026 (Psychic hotline)
electro-folk, latin alternative, lo-fi

“Helado Tropical” is the name chosen by Roberto Carlos Lange and Fabi Reyna for a meeting that, at least on paper, seemed destined to produce sparks. He, active for years as Helado Negro, has built an intimate, melancholic and oblique brand of electronic music; she, founder of Reyna Tropical, weaves together liquid guitars, Afro-Latin pulses, field recordings and migrant memories. Two kindred trajectories, never quite overlapping.
They met in 2024 during an informal session in North Carolina. It was meant to be a one-off: it turned into three days of recording, then files exchanged remotely, further sessions, and finally an album. Even the title came about effortlessly, a spontaneous fusion of their respective stage names. The record seems to arrive already acclimated. No settling-in period, no threshold to cross: it walks into the room at just the right temperature. Its territory is a Latin, diasporic electronic pop, soft-edged, threaded through with reverbed guitars, hushed drum machines and Caribbean rhythms stripped of any postcard temptation.

"Sensación" builds on an almost skeletal percussive grid: sparse hits, long sustained bass notes, the two voices converging without ever fully overlapping. On "Soledad", by contrast, the synths darken, the tempo widens, and Reyna's voice fills the void with a stillness only slightly cracked. Meanwhile "Fluye", tucked between the fleeting "Luna" and "Sol", is the strongest card in the deck: it works beautifully with syncopation and mix depth, keeping the guitar peripheral, a luminous trail at the edges of the track. "Un Calor" finally closes things out on a steady, compressed drum machine, with small reverbs that conjure the feeling of an evening that can finally breathe.

Everything flows elegantly, without any obvious missteps. And yet it's precisely this consistency that ends up flattening their respective identities. Helado Negro loses some of his disorienting melancholy; Reyna Tropical dials back its rhythmic nerve, physicality and sense of space. The production rounds off edges, smooths things over, sweetens the mix. The result is pleasant, polished, far from negligible. But the alchemy falls short of the sum of its parts: two singular artists who, together, arrive at music that's sleeker but less personal. In this case, one plus one adds up to something less than one.
