Helado Negro

Helado Negro is the musical project of Roberto Carlos Lange, a US artist and producer of Ecuadorian descent, born in Miami in 1980. Active since the late 2000s, he has developed a personal musical language in which home-recorded electronics, ambient-pop, folk and Latin American rhythms coexist with intimate songwriting, often tied to family memory, diasporic identity and emotional vulnerability.

After a long run in the underground, he reached a wider audience with “Private Energy” and especially with “This Is How You Smile” in 2019, widely regarded as one of his most accomplished works. It was followed by “Far In“, his first album released on 4AD, and by “Phasor” in 2024, on which his electronics grew brighter, more rhythmic and rich with inventive timbres.

His work also extends to installations and multidisciplinary collaborations, such as Kite Symphony, made with artist Kristi Sword. In 2026 he meets the Afro-Latin sensibility of Fabi Reyna on the project “Helado Tropical“, a collaborative album in which their respective sensibilities merge into warm, rarefied and sinuous electronic pop.
