DÉÉFAIT - Dééfait

2026 (Ici d'ailleurs)
experimental jam-rock, noise rock

The debut from French outfit Dééfait is a journey in which noise doesn't serve to destroy the world, but accompanies us as we explore its cracks, in a kind of ritual celebrated before an empty altar. The compositions of the Parisian quintet live in a state of hypnotic tension, perpetually suspended between implosion and sonic expansion. The guitars intertwine like exposed live wires, the drone settles onto the skin, while krautrock rhythms maintain a rigid, almost mechanical motion. And yet, beneath this seemingly implacable geometry, everything feels on the verge of giving way at any moment. There's never a true, liberating explosion, only a constant sense that something is about to happen, again and again, in an endless loop.

The album's theme is also a reflection on identity: how much of what we call personality is truly our own, and how much is constructed through language, culture and the stories we tell ourselves?
Ric Lara translates this uncertainty into a voice that mixes registers, breaks syntax and moves through sonic contradictions without trying to resolve them. And that's where the difference lies in this debut, arrived after years of hard graft, festivals and jam sessions: some albums distinctly demand a response, posing questions, searching for meaning, while “Dééfait” prefers to dig all the way down, showing that beneath all the layers, in the end, there is nothing.

“I Promise To Divide You” is undoubtedly one of the album's more accessible tracks. Pablo Valero's ritualistic drumming and the interlocking guitars of Lucas Valero and Gregoire Couvert build a menacing psychedelic landscape, while Lara's voice floats above the instrumental magma like a message from a wasteland. This isn't the classic frontman vocal leading the song: here the voice becomes color, a spectral presence, one more instrument within the compositional layering.
It's this anomaly that makes Dééfait hard to pin down within a single musical current. Their roots in the hypnotic repetition of Can and Boredoms are palpable, but they never harden into an imitated formula. The group works through long jams, letting ideas emerge from disorder and gradually take shape. The result is something unstable and spontaneous, yet never short on remarkable rhythmic and dynamic precision.

Dééfait offer no meanings to gather up, no center to return to. Hence their choice to mix languages, grammars, genres: the syntax is broken, fragmented, and the music reflects these microfractures. There's no answer, no meaning: only the question, suspended, and the inexorable defeat of our times.
