PEKI MOMÉS - Peki Momés

2025 (Mocambo)
anatolian-pop, city pop, dancefloor, funk

Calling the eponymous debut album by Peki Momés “a breath of fresh air” might seem paradoxical for a project that draws so knowingly and emphatically on vintage aesthetics: funk, the dancefloor, and nods to pop sounds from other eras. And yet the Turkish artist, based in Germany, stands out for her ability to reshape past sonic legacies into an expressive, contemporary language. Her music naturally blends sounds and rhythms from different eras and latitudes, using a sonic grammar all her own. The result is a sound that seems to look beyond the obvious, while still feeling familiar to the ear.

Acting as the engine of the whole project is "Göç Mevsimi", a track that shows how well the singer balances danceability with production finesse: with its enveloping groove and finely calibrated arrangements, it's one of the most interesting tracks of the past year. Meanwhile, "Rüya" confirms this approach: its hypnotic pulse and melodic trajectory have drawn international attention, earning it airtime overseas on Iggy Pop's radio show.

As the album unfolds, more contemplative moments alternate with others that keep the overall energy alive, highlighting the cohesion of a project conceived as a whole. "Masmavi" showcases Peki Momés's ability to blend psychedelia and disco with elegance, thanks to well-measured synth textures and melodic lines that keep the contrast between lightness and depth constantly alive. "Yaşlı Dünya", by contrast, seems to pull the listener into a hypnotic vortex rather than inviting them to dance, gradually letting Eastern-tinged sounds and timbral nuances surface, turning the track into an ambiguous, suggestive experience.

On the album's more playful side, "Oyun" takes on an interesting role thanks to its explicit stylistic nod to Japanese city pop. Indeed, Peki Momés has repeatedly acknowledged the influence of Japanese artist Akiko Yano on her work, and in "Oyun" that legacy emerges in a play of harmonic lines that slide between danceable electronic sparkle and jazzy phrasing. The closing stretch is equally convincing, swinging between the lyrical tension of "Bahar" and the closing track "Laleler", which, with its Anatolian grooves and funk–psychedelic pulses, pulls together the record's main stylistic threads.

Overall, "Peki Momés" doesn't reach dazzling peaks beyond the standout tracks already mentioned, but it remains consistent and solid in quality from start to finish, with a clearly defined artistic vision that sacrifices neither expressive intensity nor stylistic unity. The Turkish artist is already at work on her next album, and we're curious to see how she'll further develop her sonic language.
