Se gli U2 di oggi ci intristiscono un po’, è sempre giusto e doveroso ricordare cosa sono stati negli anni migliori della loro carriera. A rammentarcelo, giunge questo Ep di 5 brani, (troppo) stringata sintesi di una delle due esibizioni live alla Rds Arena di Dublino del 1993. La pubblicazione, avvenuta in cd e vinile 12″ in tiratura limitata più digitale (incluso Spatial Audio/Atmos), rappresenta la prima testimonianza ufficiale – al di fuori dei numerosi bootleg circolati negli anni – dello Zoo Tv, il tour mondiale che, tra febbraio 1992 e dicembre 1993, ha supportato l’uscita di “Achtung Baby“, capolavoro dei quattro irlandesi datato 1991. La tournée vide Bono Vox e compagni esibirsi di fronte a 5,3 milioni di spettatori in 157 show. Nello stesso periodo, la band dublinese pubblicò – nel luglio del 1993 – l’album in studio “Zooropa”, altra interessante tappa del percorso sperimentale dei 90s, qui rappresentata da una delle tracce in scaletta.

Lo show, andato in scena a Dublino il 28 agosto, fu trasmesso in diretta mondiale durante un programma radiofonico, consentendo a circa 700 milioni di fan in tutto il mondo di condividere l’emozione del concerto.

Al di là dell’interesse di natura “storica” di fan e collezionisti, tuttavia, “Zoo TV Live From Dublin 1993” merita attenzione per la sua capacità di condensare in soli cinque brani lo spirito di quel mastodontico Zoo Tv Tour, che rivoluzionò l’idea stessa del concerto rock, trasformandolo in un’esperienza multimediale e multisensoriale. Le esecuzioni live dei brani aggiungono ulteriore dinamismo ed energia a brani che già nelle versioni in studio fuoriuscivano dai solchi con tutta la loro potenza sonora. È il caso dell’iniziale “Zoo Station”, in cui la chitarra distorta di The Edge qui è ancora più abrasiva, con l’uso di delay e distorsioni a creare un muro sonoro denso e industriale, mentre Bono, con la sua voce filtrata, alimenta un’atmosfera alienante e futuristica, anticipando il tema del tour: il caos tecnologico e lo strapotere dei media.

Con “Mysterious Ways” gli U2 portano il groove al centro della scena: già carico di influenze funk e dance, nella versione live il brano acquista ulteriore vivacità, con The Edge che si addentra in riff funky, arricchendoli con tocchi di wah-wah e filtrando il suono per adattarsi al contesto elettronico del tour, mentre la sezione ritmica di Clayton e Mullen mantiene una tensione costante, con un’energia palpabile che scatenerà le danze sotto il palco.

Più intima e rilassata la parentesi rappresentata da “Tryin’ To Throw Your Arms Around The World”, nona traccia di “Achtung Baby”, con il suo tono quasi confidenziale, che dal vivo la band rende ancor più delicato e riflessivo, con la chitarra minimale di The Edge che si limita a fornire un delicato sottofondo armonico, lasciando spazio alla voce e al testo malinconico di Bono.

Gli ultimi due brani, invece, sono un abisso di malinconia. “Stay (Faraway, So Close!)”, terzo singolo estratto da “Zooropa”, incluso anche nella colonna sonora del film “Così lontano così vicino” di Wim Wenders, conserva la sua natura di contrita preghiera laica, con una costruzione graduale, a sostenere il cantato suadente di Bono, in un crescendo emotivo molto coinvolgente. A chiudere, il brano che concludeva anche la scaletta di “Achtung Baby” e tutti i concerti dello ZooTv Tour, “Love Is Blindness”, funerea – e splendida – ballata, che qui assume un senso quasi liturgico, appoggiandosi sulle note flebili di Adam Clayton e sui battiti sottili di Larry Mullen; il frastuono della modernità si ritira per far spazio a un’amara riflessione sul disincanto, con riferimenti precisi anche alla tragedia del terrorismo che ha reso cieca una nazione intera, la loro Irlanda: “In a parked car/ In a crowded street/ You see your love made complete/ Thread is ripping/ The knot is slipping/ Love is blindness”, canta Bono, alludendo agli attentati con autobomba dell’Ira a Dublino e Monaghan nel 1974, dove morirono 34 persone. Un sommesso requiem, pensato per Nina Simone, che grazie a un basso grave e pulsante si fa ballata notturna, magnetica, irresistibile, dal vivo, come su disco.

Nei suoi 26 minuti e 50 secondi, “Zoo Tv Live From Dublin 1993” riesce a catturare l’essenza del tour Zoo Tv e del periodo forse più sperimentale degli U2, mettendo in luce anche la precisione tecnica delle esecuzioni e l’affiatamento raggiunto in quegli anni dal quartetto di Dublino. Le scelte di produzione, che mescolano elementi elettronici e sonorità più tradizionali, regalano un’esperienza di ascolto che è tanto potente quanto immersiva. E Bono canta sempre divinamente, alla faccia di quello che sarebbe poi andato a sotenere in successive interviste (e dello stato attuale delle sue corde vocali).

Resta tuttavia il dubbio di fondo: perché non fissare su disco l’intero concerto, del quale qui riportiamo l’intera scaletta. Sarebbe stato sicuramente un prodotto più sensato e gradito dai fan. Ma se l’amore è cieco, anche questo si potrà perdonare a Bono e compagni (quindi il voto è la media tra la qualità delle canzoni e la valutazione dell’operazione commerciale).
