Il 2020 è un anno importante per gli Ulver, che festeggiano i venticinque anni di attività non solo con questo disco, ma anche con un libro autobiografico, ricco di interviste e fotografie, “Wolves Evolve: The Ulver Story”. Un titolo quantomeno azzeccato per raccontare la storia di una band che nel corso degli anni è passata dal metal estremo degli esordi al synth-pop della ultima fase, passando per le sperimentazioni e le contaminazioni più disparate, gestendo ogni trasformazione con naturalezza e controllo inumani. Ulver in norvegese significa lupi, ma la costante mutazione del progetto di Kristoffer “Garm” Rygg fa pensare piuttosto a un serpente, che cambiando pelle può infiltrarsi e strisciare a suo agio in ogni genere musicale, come vi fosse nato dentro.

La line-up degli Ulver di “Flowers Of Evil”, pressocché invariata rispetto a quella che registrò l’imponente “The Assassination Of Julius Caesar” e il successivo Ep, conferma che per questa volta non è stata attuata alcuna trasformazione e che si tratta a tutti gli effetti di un’ulteriore incursione nei territori synth-pop e darkwave esplorati dal disco precedente.

“One Last Dance” ha il compito di impiantare lo spleen oscuro del disco, fatto di drum machine e sintetizzatori incessanti, che appare sin da subito meno marziale e più romantico di quello del 2017. La presenza di Christian Fennesz alla chitarra, con le sue proverbiali sbavature, rende il brano ancora più penetrante ed evocativo. “Russian Dolls” insiste nella stessa direzione, con un ritmo più serrato e ballabile, mentre la successiva “Machine Guns And Peacock Feathers” è ancora più robusta e approfitta della forza di uno scattante riff di chitarra elettrica per inveire contro i governi bugiardi e autodistruttivi dei nostri giorni.

Dopo “Hour Of The Wolf” e “Apocalypse 1983”, che con un po’ di maniera si limitano a espandere il catalogo synth-pop della band, è la volta di “Little Boy” e del suo lungo finale screziato da chitarre graffianti e lontani echi di cornamusa.

Si torna a ballare con “Nostalgia”, un singolo dal tiro quasi radiofonico: ritmica incalzante di pianoforte e synth come nei Depeche Mode dei tempi andati, coriste disco a fare la loro comparsa nel ritornello e una lunga coda tutta da ancheggiare.

Certo, in “Flowers Of Evil” mancano la forza dirompente e “l’effetto sorpresa” del disco del 2017, ma Garm e i suoi vestono così bene i panni synth-pop che ascoltare questo nuovo mucchio di scurissime ballate sintetiche è un piacere e una necessità.
