Proprio sul filo di lana, arriva il terzo disco marchiato 2020 per la combriccola di John Dwyer, uno di quei musicisti (fra gli altri vanno citati almeno Stu Mackenzie e Ty Segall) che se si limitassero a rilasciare un solo disco di all’anno, probabilmente pubblicherebbero soltanto capolavori. E invece si sentono autorizzati a inondare il mercato, cannibalizzando ogni volta la loro uscita precedente, tattica che se inizialmente suscita simpatia, alla lunga provoca perdita di interesse: un mezzo suicidio commerciale, in un’epoca tanto densa di uscite discografiche. E nel tris servito durante gli ultimi dodici mesi, “Panther Rotate” si distingue per essere il meno interessante.

Presentato come un remix album dell’ottimo “Protean Threat”, di cui ne costituisce anche l’anagramma, è in realtà una sequenza di trastullamenti cervellotici che non portano alcun valore aggiunto, nessun miglioramento, a canzoni che restano ben più efficaci nella versione originale. Sette alternative take, ottenute lavorando su alcune piste, eliminando i chitarroni fuzz e inserendo ingenti dosi di elettronica e rumori ambientali, compromettendo gran parte della forza visionaria che la band è in grado di esprimere. Un’opera sperimentale (tutte le tracce revisionate hanno la parola “Experiment” inclusa nel titolo) e ardita, basata su ripetizioni di scuola kraut, droni ambientali, deliri psichedelici e derive Zappa-esque.

Un po’ come prendere le derive allucinate dei Radiohead zona “Kid A” e miscelarle con le paranoie lisergiche dei Pink Floyd epoca Barrett, ma nella sconfinata discografia degli Oh Sees resta inevitabilmente un capitolo superfluo, per completisti, con pochi frangenti degni di nota. Prendete “Toadstool Experiment”, non è neanche lontana parente della coinvolgente “Toadstool”, oppure verificate quanto la potenza di fuoco di “Scramble Suit II” non sia minimamente contemplata in “Scramble Experiment”. Nemmeno gli unici due inediti (le narcotizzanti “Synthesis” e “Poem 2”) si distinguono per incisività.

Qualcuno faccia sapere a Dwyer che non è strettamente necessario pubblicare ogni cosa gli frulli per la testa in studio di registrazione. Forse è il momento di prendersi un paio di settimane di pausa?
