CRANBERRIES - In The End

Of course, all the behind-the-scenes context of a "last time" helps bring a tear or two, as in the voluptuous "Lost", where O’Riordan's fairy-like voice indulges in its trademark flourishes, soaring ever higher. Or when the beefier bassline of "Wake Me When It's Over" winks at that of "Zombie". Nothing the band hasn't already covered, in other words, but always delivered with great effectiveness.

"Catch Me If You Can", on the other hand, gives the Cranberries' sound unprecedented clothing. First a piano with a sprightly neoclassical gait, then a reinforcement of dramatic strings driving the verses, making it a very elegant track that, without giving up a touch of accessibility, is also sophisticated.

On an album where most of the song titles seem like sinister prophecies of what was to come, the very sunny acoustic strumming of "Summer Song" offers a welcome break. The tones then turn softly dramatic again in the farewell entrusted to the title track, which closes both the album and the adventure with a gentle embrace of melancholy strings and Celtic vocals.
