ST. VINCENT - MassEducation

The full vocal talent of the Tulsa-born musician comes into the open here, and it's truly a wonderful thing to hear. At times the songs are barely recognizable, revealing a taste for radical transformation reminiscent of Chan Marshall in her (glorious) "The Covers Record" days. Take "Young Lover", for example, a song that benefits anew from being stripped of its original pulse and its initial explosion in wave-flavored dress. A reworking that brings a hidden light to the fore, a melodic intensity straight out of another era. The same goes for "Fear The Future" and "Los Ageless", which sound as if lifted from a Rickie Lee Jones record. Less striking, by contrast, is the rereading of "Happy Birthday, Johnny", a ballad already extremely tender and bare-boned in its original version. Meanwhile the closing "Hang On Me", duly stripped of its synthetic clothing, gains further depth, serving as a perfect example of what's been noted above.
