Se, a poche settimane dalla sua morte improvvisa, la discografia di Jóhann Jóhannsson ha continuato ad arricchirsi, ciò non fa che rimarcare l’intensa attività di un compositore all’apice della sua meritata fama, specialmente nell’ambito delle colonne sonore per il cinema.

È realmente una carriera stroncata, dopo la firma con la prestigiosa Deutsche Grammophon e le commissioni da parte di grandi registi come Denis Villeneuve (nonostante la sconcertante ritrattazione su “Blade Runner 2049”), Darren Aronofsky (“madre!”) e, più di recente, Garth Davis per “Mary Magdalene”, con protagonisti Rooney Mara e Joaquin Phoenix.

La soundtrack di “The Mercy”, edita una settimana prima del decesso, forniva un efficace ed emozionante sunto del suo sound dagli esordi a oggi; il doppio remaster e tributo dedicato a “Englabörn”, invece, è divenuto il suo ideale epitaffio, sigillando l’intera sua produzione come un cerchio perfetto. Ma rimaneva ancora da stampare questa enfatica partitura realizzata assieme alla connazionale Hildur Guðnadóttir, che forse più degli altri lasciti recenti potrebbe farci avvertire il rimpianto di non poter scoprire le altre possibili evoluzioni del suo stile.

Pur avendo già in parte dialogato con i linguaggi della musica sacra, e specificamente con la polifonia corale (“Arrival”), in “Mary Magdalene” Jóhannsson sembra attingere con più decisione al minimalismo sacro che gli è contemporaneo, dagli equilibri perfetti del tintinnabuli di Arvo Pärt all’enfatico sinfonismo di Henryk Górecki. Si tratta perlopiù di movimenti brevi, melodie accarezzate per un attimo sino al completamento dell’immagine evocata (“Messiah”, delicato dialogo a due voci tra fiati dolci e archi, o “Ravine” e “End Of A Journey”, guidate dal violoncello di Guðnadóttir e da un celestiale canto femminile).

Beninteso, il maestro islandese traspone fedelmente quella che è una vicenda storica e religiosa nella quale vi è più tormento che estasi, e in questo senso non manca un passaggio particolarmente stridente e di forte carica drammatica – “The Goats” – come già furono le interpretazioni del calvario di Gesù il Nazareno a opera di Krzysztof Penderecki e Sofia Gubaidulina. La parabola del granello di senape (“The Mustard Seed”), contraddistinta da un tema di pianoforte simile a quelli de “The Theory of Everything”, viene ripresa in chiusura con “Resurrection”, sua espansione all’intero organico con un rilucente unisono di xilofoni, voci e archi: “il più piccolo di tutti i semi” fiorisce e con le sue ampie fronde offre riparo a tutti gli uccelli del cielo.

“Mary Magdalene” beneficia di un più ampio respiro stilistico che nobilita ulteriormente anche un autore non troppo avvezzo al cliché modern classical come Jóhannsson, il cui tragico destino ha quantomeno permesso di portare a termine anche queste splendide pagine orchestrali, tra le ultime testimonianze della sua profonda sensibilità compositiva.
