Difficile che Jóhann Jóhannsson sbagli un colpo. “Prisoners”, la colonna sonora del bel film di Denis Villeneuve, è all’altezza dei suoi capolavori. E dato il successo della pellicola – quantomeno negli Stati Uniti – si prevede che le quotazioni del compositore islandese continuino a salire.

Con l’aiuto di un’intera orchestra, Jóhannsson ha rinnovato il concetto di colonna sonora, arricchendo con le sue caratteristiche ambientazioni nordiche le classiche dinamiche dei film di Hollywood. Tra i musicisti dell’orchestra spicca un gruppo di solisti formato da Thomas Bloch (onde martenot), Erik Skodvin (contrabbasso, violoncello, chitarre ed elettronica), Thomas Bowes (violino solo), Hildur Guðnadóttir (violoncello solo) e Caroline Dale (violoncello solo). Lo stesso Jóhannsson si è occupato di elettronica, chitarre, percussioni e del sontuoso organo della Frederiks Kirke di Copenhagen.

Già dai primi passaggi della colonna sonora si evince la natura crepuscolare dell’opera: temi suonati con gli strumenti solisti doppiati dall’orchestra quasi in punta di piedi (“I Can’t Find Them”); melodie che si aprono lentamente dispiegando tutta la loro malinconia (“ The Search Party”). Una tensione elettrica emerge tra i bassi profondi di “Surveillance Video”, poco prima che con “The Candlelight Vigil” Jóhannsson sveli tutta la dirompente portata della sua orchestrazione. Neanche il tempo di abituarsi all’ariosità del tema che la seguente “Escape” fa tremare la terra con i suoni del violoncello che sembrano provenire dallo sprofondo.

Su “The Tall Man” un beat elettronico dialoga con i suoni dell’orchestra creando una tensione non molto distante da quella dei dischi di Teho Teardo. Tensione che si sciolglie nella melodia stellare di “The Everything Bible”, tra i passaggi più suggesstivi dell’intero lavoro. Nel continuo alternarsi di ombra e luce, risplendono con forza accecante il crescendo di “Through Falling Snow” e il gran finale dell’omonima “The Prisoners”.
