I Flaming Lips dovrebbero essere allo stesso tempo ringraziati e accusati per aver pubblicato un disco come “Scratching The Door”. Il fatto che abbiano deciso di ristampare le loro primissime registrazioni – le due demo iniziali e l’Ep di debutto “The Flaming Lips” – la dice lunga sul (non)senso che sta via via acquisendo il fenomeno revivalista. I Flaming Lips degli esordi suonano oggi stanchi e invecchiati e la loro psichedelia, un po’ goffa e naïf, estrapolata dal suo contesto e impiantata nel centro della contemporaneità, appare vacillante e depotenziata.

Le sonorità graffianti si direbbero distillate: qualunque cosa volessero essere, hanno perso vigore ed efficacia, mentre sembrano annaspare nel vano tentativo di sopravvivere all’ingiuria del tempo. Ma dal tempo non si scappa, è il giudice più accorto e severo e l’unico in grado di smascherare ciò che sotto la corazza non porta l’anima. Ed è proprio così che si rivelano i brani riesumati dai Flaming Lips: dei morti viventi, svuotati di quel che forse non hanno mai avuto.

Va specificato: per quanto mediocri, l’oggetto principale della critica non sono le tracce contenute nel disco, ma piuttosto la scelta di ristamparle. “Scratching The Door”, musicalmente parlando, non riesce ad allignare nel presente e appare quindi come un’anticaglia un po’ fine a se stessa; allora perché proporlo?

Nella risposta a questa domanda sta il motivo della condanna e dell’assoluzione dei Flaming Lips. Se poniamo mente sullo stato attuale del fenomeno del revival, iniziato pressappoco nei 2000, non possiamo non accorgerci di come la nostra fascinazione per il passato, divenuta l’imperativo categorico del contemporaneo, si stia trasmutando in un’ossessione vera e propria: ha valore documentario e nostalgico tutto ciò che appartiene al passato, per il semplice fatto di appartenere al passato. Questa, oltre alla rimasterizzazione dei brani, sembra essere l’unica ragione a giustificare l’uscita di un album come “Scratching The Door”, un oggetto destinato al solo collezionismo, che non glorifica il passato dei Flaming Lips né aggiunge alcunché di rilevante al materiale preesistente.

Appare dunque chiaro il perché della condanna ai FL, mentre rimane ancora oscura la ragione per la quale andrebbero “ringraziati”. È piuttosto semplice: possiamo smascherare il parossismo della mania revivalista proprio per il modo che ha questa ristampa di collimare con lo stato in cui si trova la musica attualmente. “Scratching The Door” è, insomma, una cartina tornasole e, come tipologia di prodotto, l’alimento di cui ci cibiamo (volontariamente o non) con sempre maggiore frequenza.
