ROEDELIUS - Geschenk Des Augenblicks (ristampa)

2011 (Eg / bureau b)
modern composition, neo-classical

In keeping with the later developments of Cluster, Roedelius is – unlike his partner Moebius – the pacifying soul, the one who increasingly banishes the proto-industrial impulses of their origins.

"Geschenk" (1984) is thus even more cinematic than his "Selbstportrait" albums, almost soundtrack-like, able to find the perfect balance between the ultra-romantic phrases of "Adieu Quichotte" (practically a revisited theme from "Love Story") and "Gefundene Zeit", and the epic staccato piano-and-keyboard sonatas of "Geschenk Des Augenblicks" and "Ohn Unterlass". Roedelius keeps adding, one track at a time, a new instrument to accompany his beloved piano: the harmonica on "Kleine Blume Irgenwo", the electronic orchestrations of "Sehnsucht, Ich Will Dich Lassen" (the high point) and "Zu Füßen Der Berge Am Ufer Des Sees", the soft pizzicato of "Tag Für Tag".

Compared to his peers in lyrical minimalism (Wim Mertens, Michael Nyman), Roedelius lacks the same aura of fortune. Above all, he lacks a signature track, a hit. Still, the suspense of each piece remains magical, and its elegance heightens the twists of the composition. 2011 reissue courtesy of Bureau B.
