FRANCESCO GIANNICO - 4 Sonatas for Electroacoustic Thoughts

From the collaboration between Francesco Giannico (also known as Mark Hamn) and Stefano Spataro comes this “4 Sonatas for Electroacoustic Thoughts”, a roughly twenty-minute EP that seeks a meeting point between electroacoustics, improvisation and field recordings.

A wholly futile search, since the work remains completely trapped in limbo, never managing to "tell us" anything genuinely interesting. The 4 sonatas follow one another, in fact, with no clear direction, no destination. It all proceeds gropingly, feeling its way through the dark, the void of its own musical imagination.

Here, then, are the distractedly scraped strings, the dark swells and the muted psych-folk touches of "Sonata For Victims Of Themselves" and "Sonata For Warm Moments Of Coldness", built around a minimal acoustic guitar figure and some muddled electronic flourishes.

With "Sonata For A Few Friends", the duo veers toward ambient-glitch territory, focusing more on emotional delivery (still largely muted) rather than wasting time on a sort of amateurish improvisation.

All told, this four-handed operation has all the hallmarks of an off-the-cuff exercise, a half-hearted attempt to set off down paths that, judging by these tracks at least, still remain far from the pair's real artistic inclinations.

And, just so there's no room for doubt, it closes badly with the pointless maneuvers of fanciful electroacoustics that make "Sonata For Idiots" the perfect soundtrack to a yawn.
