Sesto album per Mark Lanegan, secondo a nome della Mark Lanegan Band, "Bubblegum" era stato anticipato in ottobre 2003 dall'Ep "Here Comes That Weird Chill" e doveva segnare quasi una svolta nella discografia del cantautore di Ellensburg; se, però, le otto tracce dell'Ep si dimostravano azzeccate e perfettamente amalgamate nel loro insieme, lo stesso non si può dire di questo disco.

Laddove nell'Ep l'alternanza tra il Lanegan cantore di folk-blues oscuro e rarefatto e la M. L. Band dal suono rock figlio dell'esperienza con i Queens Of The Stone Age funzionava sia nella singola traccia che nel complesso, in "Bubblegum" questa risulta essere una dicotomia troppo marcata e che rischia di adombrare un lavoro a tratti magnifico, nel quale si possono trovare pezzi tra i migliori dell'intera discografia dell'ex-Screaming Trees.

Esaminando il trittico iniziale, risulta per esempio che stona l'inserimento della movimentata "Hit The City" (primo dei due episodi in duetto con PJ Harvey) tra la lancinante e autobiografica marcia di "When Your Number Isn't Up" e la ballata ipnotica "Wedding Dress"; lo stesso dicasi per le differenze troppo sostanziali tra le splendide rarefazioni gospel di "Strange Religion" e il rock un po' facilone di "Sideways In Reverse".

Come nell'Ep, anche in questo album si trovano eccellenti apparizioni di artisti/amici (oltre alla già menzionata Harvey, ci sono Greg Dulli, due membri dei Queens Of The Stone Age, Homme e Olivieri, e due ex Guns 'n' Roses, Duff McKagan e Izzy Stradlin) ma, a dispetto di questo, alcune delle migliori cose di "Bubblegum" sono da ricercare nelle tracce confezionate con l'apporto solo (o quasi) del co-produttore Alain Johannes.

Colpiscono nel segno l'inquieta e disordinata "Can't Come Down", la suggestiva ballata "Morning Glory Wine", i giri di chitarre della sincopata "Head" e anche "Driving Death Valley Blues", miglior episodio di Queens of the stone age sound costruito paradossalmente senza l'apporto né di Homme né di Olivieri.

Qualora poi si pensasse che la nuova strada di Lanegan debba trovarsi dalle parti delle Desert Session o di "Songs For The Deaf", è allora il caso di ascoltare con attenzione "Like Little Willie John", probabilmente l'episodio migliore di "Bubblegum", dove l'ex-Screaming Trees si cala nel ruolo a lui più congeniale di storyteller di frontiera, creando una ballata folk dalle atmosfere senza tempo.

In conclusione questo "Bubblegum" risulta un buon disco, sicuramente inferiore ai precedenti lavori di Lanegan e forse penalizzato da pezzi poco riusciti o superflui, ma ennesima conferma del talento solista del cantante di Ellensburg e ulteriore tassello in una discografia finora inappuntabile.
