Otto tracce compongono questo Ep, assaggio di quel "Bubblegum", previsto per la primavera del 2004, che costituirà il sesto album ufficiale nella carriera di Mark Lanegan o, forse più correttamente, il primo album della Mark Lanegan Band; in questo disco, infatti, troviamo ospiti fissi che poi torneranno sull'album definitivo: Josh Homme e Nick Oliveri dei QOTSA, Chris Goss dei Master of Reality, l'ex Afghan Whigs Greg Dulli, Dean Ween e Alain Johannes.

Inizialmente concepito come singolo e poi allargato grazie all'inclusione di "outtakes" e di due nuove canzoni (la cover di Captain Beefheart "Clear Spot" e "Skeletal History") l'Ep annuncia i suoi toni già dalla scura copertina.

Il mefistofelico volto di Lanegan che emerge dal buio è infatti sintomatico del contenuto, diabolico come il "Methamphetamine Blues" iniziale, scandito da percussioni martellanti e dalla chitarra dilaniata di Josh Homme, ma anche oscuro come la "Skeletal History" che l'ex Screaming Trees firma insieme a Oliveri e allo stesso Homme.

La presenza costante dei due Queens Of The Stone Age non influenza più di tanto il disco come si potrebbe pensare; anzi, paradossalmente, la canzone più vicina ai suoni di "Songs For The Deaf" è proprio la cover "Clear Spot" nei crediti della quale compare solo il nome di Alain Johannes.

Su tutto invece si staglia la voce di Mark Lanegan, che guida nel buio, che gratta con toni di whiskey e tabacco; solenne come certe poesie in musica di John Trudell nella breve "On The Steps Of The Cathedral", morbida nella finale "Sleep With Me", che sarebbe potuta stare perfettamente tra i primi solchi di "Scraps Of Midnight" o da brividi come nell'incredibile "Lexington Slow Down" nella quale, con il pianoforte come unico compagno, si muove a suo agio tra gospel e soul.

Disco oscuro, sì, persino diabolico (sentire, prego, la risata iniziale), ma anche evocativo e delicato, fatto di sudore e fango come di amore e lacrime, blues di un'anima in pena, rock sporco, graffiato e rumoroso.

Quella che da sempre ci regala Mark Lanegan è musica in continuo cambiamento, ma che in fondo rimane la stessa, che sia folk, rock, blues o lo-fi, è una musica che forse non ti fa battere il piede, che forse non ti ritrovi a canticchiare, ma che ti prende allo stomaco e al cuore e ti graffia l'anima. Poco più di otto euro per queste otto tracce che diventano il mio disco dell'anno e se queste sono outtake, "Wait Until Spring, People", ché la primavera del prossimo anno si annuncia ricca per davvero.
