The Talking Heads are once again showing up all together, but for now a full-on reunion remains far from the stage. David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz and Jerry Harrison reunited in New York for a public event tied to the launch of a new SiriusXM channel entirely devoted to the band, as well as the upcoming super deluxe reissue of "Fear Of Music", the group's third album, released in 1979.
All together in New York
It's another step in the gradual rapprochement of the four musicians after decades of strained relationships and seemingly irreconcilable rifts. A first significant sign came in 2023, when the original lineup reunited at the Toronto International Film Festival to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of "Stop Making Sense", the celebrated concert film directed by Jonathan Demme. Now Byrne, Weymouth, Frantz and Harrison have once again shared the same space, this time at the SiriusXM studios, taking part in "Front Row with Talking Heads", a conversation moderated by Este Haim.
The event mainly served to look back on the band's history and artistic legacy, through memories, classic tracks, rarities and live recordings. The presence of Este Haim, a longtime avowed admirer of Talking Heads and of Tina Weymouth in particular, also underscored the influence the band has had on later generations.
No announcement, however, on a possible live return or the recording of new music. All four reiterated that, for now, the operation is purely celebratory in nature. David Byrne nonetheless spoke with evident pride about the music they made together: "I try not to look back too much, but I'm very proud of everything we did. It's pretty remarkable how this stuff has sort of stood the test of time, and keeps finding a new audience".
The reissue of "Fear Of Music"
At the heart of the celebrations is above all "Fear Of Music", which returns to shops on November 13 in a new Super Deluxe Edition. The box set will include the remastered album, alternate versions, outtakes and archival material, as well as previously unreleased recordings from two 1979 concerts held shortly after the album's release: one at the Berklee Performing Arts Center in Boston and one at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, New Jersey.
The Blu-ray will also include footage of Talking Heads' performance on the BBC programme "The Old Grey Whistle Test". The reissue will be available in several configurations, including 3 CDs plus Blu-ray, a double LP and a six-LP edition. The physical box set will also include a 60-page photo book with liner notes written by Will Hermes, author of "Love Goes To Buildings On Fire: Five Years In New York That Changed Music Forever".
This is the second major archival project devoted to Talking Heads in 2026. Back in March, Rhino released "Tentative Decisions: Demos & Live", a collection focused on the band's formative years, featuring demos and live recordings made between 1975 and 1977.
So for those still hoping for a genuine reunion, there's no confirmation yet. But seeing Byrne, Weymouth, Frantz and Harrison sitting together once again, looking back without apparent tension on a story that for years seemed definitively closed, remains a sign that's hard to ignore.
