It took almost a quarter of a century to finally bring about the definitive edition of “Machina I” and “Machina II”, the one Billy Corgan had always envisioned. “The record was conceived as a sort of pseudo rock opera, but when the band broke up in the middle of the process, the album was never completed the way I had written it. I consider it an unfinished work,” Corgan told Stereogum in a 2014 interview. Now the Smashing Pumpkins have finally announced the details of the reissue of “Machina/The Machines Of God” (2000) and its twin “Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music”. The release is set for August 22, courtesy of UMe and Madame Zuzu’s Tea Shop, in several formats.
The remastered reissue of “Machina/The Machines of God” will be available on 180g black vinyl (2LP), in a limited crown red/black 180g vinyl edition, as well as in the usual CD and digital formats. Only at Corgan’s Madame Zuzu’s Tea Shop in Highland Park, Illinois, will it be possible to buy a super-limited deluxe vinyl box set containing a whopping 80 tracks: 48 songs from “Machina” and 32 bonus tracks including demos, outtakes and live recordings. For the first time, the two albums are officially brought together in a single release. The vinyl box set is also the only way to hear all 80 tracks in full on this format. “It took about 25 years to put out Machina the way we as a band had envisioned it, and with MadameZuzus.com as the only place to buy this massive 80-song collection, I couldn’t be prouder,” Corgan stated. “Machina was meant to be our swan song, and it truly was a labor of love to finish it, even though we were falling apart at the time. But with the world tour coming in 2025, and my solo tour with The Machines of God, this box set is both a celebration and a testament of will. It was the songs themselves that helped us — me, James and Jimmy — keep the faith.”
The Smashing Pumpkins will soon return to Italy for two shows, produced by Live Nation:
