Tornano gli Smashing Pumpkins dopo il naufragio senza superstiti di “Zeitgeist“. E tornano con un Ep di quattro pezzi che in verità riserva qualche sorpresa, in positivo questa volta. Ok, niente di nuovo all’orizzonte, se non un fare acustico maggiormente pronunciato, tuttavia a segnare la differenza è stavolta la scrittura. In soldoni, qui ci trovate i soliti saliscendi melodici e progressioni armoniche scontate come una scopata coniugale, però il buon Corgan si ricorda d’essere (stato?) un buon songwriter, e sforna almeno tre pezzi di discreta caratura.

“The Rose March”, un po’ psichedelica un po’ paracula, scorre via che è un piacere nel solco delle varie “Disarm” e “Cupid De Locke”. “Pox”, invece, esibisce i muscoli con una progressione ritmica robusta, senza tuttavia disattendere l’impronta acustica del contesto. Dalla struttura chiaramente cantautorale di questi pezzi si evince come l’apporto della band – ammesso ve ne sia ancora una – sia minimo. In effetti “American Gothic” pare il disco da cantautore adulto che Corgan ha (forse) sempre sognato di fare. E lo conferma la malinconica sciccheria shoegaze di “Sunkissed”, costruita su voce, chitarra acustica e poco altro, a marcare il vertice dell’album.

“Again, Again, Again (The Crux)” è invece una canzonetta da ospizio per reduci del grunge. Come a dire: siamo nel 2008 e gli Smashing Pumpkins esistono ancora. Dev’essere un incubo… Nel complesso, però, “American Gothic” non è la solita minestra riscaldata. Anzi, considerate le ultime prove, ha più il sapore di un gustoso consommé.
