“Abbraccia la bella morte”. Dovrebbe essere più o meno questa la traduzione del titolo del nuovo album degli Smashing Pumpkins, “Aghori Mori Mei”, concepito unendo giapponese e sanscrito. Al di là dei significati, e dei significanti, per dirla con Carmelo Bene, la storica formazione americana guidata da Billy Corgan (voce, chitarra, basso, tastiere), affiancato dai fidatissimi James Iha (basso, chitarra, cori) e Jimmy Chamberlin (batteria), torna in qualche modo al passato, spinta anche da fascinazioni gothic che evocano i fasti del divisivo “Adore“.

Insomma, anche a questo giro non mancano demoni da esorcizzare lungo il cammino della vita, per l’occasione attraverso dieci canzoni i cui testi restituiscono spesso e volentieri imprecazioni “ovvie” al cospetto dell’inesorabilità del tempo e delle cose, come nell’introduttiva “Edin”.

Se le parole esplicano qui e là quanto esposto poc’anzi, il sound degli Smashing Pumpkins, per quanto immutato e al solito curatissimo, punta come nel precedente “Atum” a un ricongiungimento ideale con i crescendo epici di capolavori insuperabili (e ovviamente insuperati) degli anni d’oro, su tutti “Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness“. Accade nella melanconica “Pentecost”, ma anche nelle tracce più hard-rock che, per quanto apprezzabili sulla carta, poco ravvivano un disco a monte ambizioso (“War Dreams Of Itself”).

In sede di presentazione, il “vecchio” Corgan ha comunque espresso bene le sue apprezzabili intenzioni: “Durante la composizione del nuovo album mi ha incuriosito il logoro assioma, ‘non puoi tornare a casa di nuovo’, che personalmente ho riscontrato essere vero nella forma, ma che mi ha fatto pensare ‘e se ci provassimo comunque?’. Non tanto nel guardare indietro con sentimentalismo, ma piuttosto come mezzo per andare avanti, per vedere se, nell’equilibrio tra successo e fallimento, il nostro modo di fare musica dei primi the '90s poteva funzionare ancora”.

La domanda però sorge spontanea: funziona ancora? A volte pare quasi di sì, caro Billy, come ad esempio nel singolo di lancio “Sighommi”. Ma spesse volte proprio no. Perché, per quanto canzoni come “Who Goes There” avrebbero avuto senso all’epoca e un destino da potenziale hit, nel 2024 appaiono inesorabilmente delle B-side ripescate dal cassetto tanto per amalgamare “epicamente e melodicamente” un album altrimenti sterile, contorto su se stesso e incapace di regalare affondi inediti.

Brani come “999”, poi, al netto di una certa drammaticità, sono perlopiù imbarazzanti, sia per quanto concerne l’impalcatura goth-rock iper-inflazionata, trita e ritrita con i suoi cambi di ritmo annunciati da riff noti pure a marziani che attendono Elon Musk sul loro “bel” pianeta rosso, sia per certe frasi da debuttante assoluto.

Altrettanto sciatta “Icarus”, a suggellare l’ennesimo momento “no”, così come la conclusiva “Murnau”, di fatto la canzone più cinematografica del lotto, con gli archi trionfali a dar man forte a una religiosità in teoria opportuna (e umanamente comprensibile) in età matura.

È la chiosa di un disco atteso dai fan ma per il resto nettamente sotto gli standard di un gruppo tanto miliare quanto ormai copia sbiadita di se stesso già da un pezzo.
