Metallica: the setlist from the Bologna show and the video of their "Ken il Guerriero" cover

05-06-2026

More than 45,000 fans packed the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara in Bologna on the evening of June 3 for the only Italian date of Metallica's "M72 World Tour". One of the most anticipated events of the summer live season, the show brought one of the most influential bands in the history of metal and rock back to Emilia, as the group continues the tour in support of the album "72 Seasons", underway since 2023.
The evening opened with sets from Knocked Loose and Gojira. Shortly before 9pm, to the strains of "It's A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock'n'Roll)" by Ac/Dc and "The Ecstasy Of Gold" by Ennio Morricone, James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo made their entrance onto the distinctive circular "In-The-Round" stage set up at the center of the stadium. The 36-meter-diameter structure was ringed by eight towers over thirty meters tall, fitted with screens and sound systems, designed to give the audience a full 360-degree view of the show.

The setlist spanned different eras of the band's career, alternating classic staples with more recent tracks from "72 Seasons". The closing stretch brought some of the fans' best-loved songs, including "Master Of Puppets" and "Enter Sandman". Here's the full setlist:

Enter Sandman
Creeping Death
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Cyanide
King Nothing
72 Seasons
The Unforgiven
Fuel
Kirk and Rob Doodle (Ken il guerriero, Spectra)
The Day That Never Comes
Wherever I May Roam
Nothing Else Matters
Sad But True
One
Seek & Destroy
Master of Puppets

Among the most surprising moments of the evening was the band's traditional segment dedicated to local cover songs. Hammett and Trujillo delivered a metal-tinged version of the famous Italian theme song for "Ken il guerriero" (Fist of the North Star), written in 1986 by Claudio Maioli, which was met with great enthusiasm from the crowd. It's a now well-established habit for the band, who in past years had already paid tribute to Italy with renditions of "C'è chi dice no" by Vasco Rossi and "Acida" by Prozac+.

In the closing moments, the band chose to pay tribute to the host city. Images of Bologna and of the show's set-up at the Dall'Ara were projected on the screens, as the group bid farewell to the crowd with their customary tossing of guitar picks.
