Lone Justice, with Maria McKee, are back with a new album after 37 years! Listen to the single "Jenny Jenkins"

14-09-2024

A warm Roman afternoon, 27 May 1987. At the Stadio Flaminio, anticipation is palpable for the live event of the year: U2 are coming, riding the global success of "The Joshua Tree", but the support bill is almost as rich, with Mick Jones's Big Audio Dynamite (Clash) and Chrissie Hynde's Pretenders. Twenty-four thousand lire is a price well worth paying for a ticket that gets you all this, and one that, for many veterans of the night, will remain a relic of the entire decade. But while the sun is still high and beating down hard on the Flaminio stands, another band sneaks onto the stage, the first of the long musical marathon. There's a wild blonde teenager gripping a Telecaster, belting into the microphone, with a handful of musicians swept into her shadow.

The crowd, however, has eyes only for Bono Vox: they boo and even hurl the odd plastic bottle onto the stage, as per the (sad) script reserved for so many unfortunate opening acts. She, the teenager, doesn't flinch, kicks the bottles back onto the grass and keeps right on thrashing about and belting out her fiery cowpunk sermons.
