Lacuna Coil: their best albums, ranked by Metal Hammer magazine

26-03-2025

Not just Maneskin. There's another Italian rock band that's been winning over audiences abroad – and has been for some time. We're talking about Milan's Lacuna Coil, to whom Hammer, the world's biggest metal webzine, has dedicated an in-depth feature ranking their ten best albums.”From their debut in Milan in the mid-Nineties – the magazine recalls in its introduction – Lacuna Coil have become true icons of gothic metal. Their incisive riffs, irresistible choruses, and of course the interplay between the two frontpeople Cristina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro have given rise to ten albums full of dark, elegant melodies.”

Below, Hammer has ranked all of Lacuna Coil's studio albums from worst to best (full feature here).

10. Shallow Life (2009)

9. Dark Adrenaline (2012)

8. Broken Crown Halo (2014)

7. In A Reverie (1999)

6. Karmacode (2006)

5. Unleashed Memories (2001)

4. Sleepless Empire (2025)

3. Delirium (2016)

2. Black Anima (2019)

1. Comalies (2002)

Last February saw the release of “Sleepless Empire”, the tenth album by the Italian metal band. It was preceded by the singles “Gravity”, “Never Dawn”, “Hosting The Shadow” (featuring Randy Blythe of Lamb Of God), “In The Meantime” (featuring Ash Costello of New Years Day) and “Oxygen”. “Gravity” tackles themes such as the inevitability of fate and life's constant ups and downs, delivering a message of resilience.

“It's not easy to keep your balance in such difficult times, we feel lost and we even struggle to breathe as we cry out for help – write Cristina Scabbia and co. in a statement – How should we deal with these moments? Should we seek help, or rather isolate ourselves from the world to pick up the pieces inside our golden, misanthropic cage? We hope you'll love ‘Gravity’ as much as we do, but above all that it makes you reflect on the time you have and on how to make the most of it”.

“Gravity” also comes with a dark-toned video directed by Martina L Mc.Lean. Watch the video for “Gravity” below.

“Sleepless Empire” follows “Comalies XX” (2022), a remake of the album “Comalies”, originally released in 2002. “It's an album that tells, through our eyes, the chaos of a generation trapped in a digital world that never stops, where social media destroys identity and pushes us, more and more every day, to turn into soulless zombies – the band explain in a statement – We find ourselves caught in the middle, having lived through the analog world and now living in the modern one, trying to understand its evolution and the meaning of it all. In every track, the journey is a hint of rebellion, a desperate attempt to rediscover yourself in an age that seems to have lost all sense of time and reality”.

The new album contains 11 tracks, each one the perfect soundtrack for a very specific moment and place. Here's the tracklist:

1. The Siege

2. Oxygen

3. Scarecrow

4. Gravity

5. I Wish You Were Dead

6. Hosting The Shadow (feat. Randy Blythe)

7. In Nomine Patris
