Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford have reunited to go back to the roots of Genesis. The three musicians got together at AIR Studios in London on 14 April to listen back to and discuss "From Genesis To Revelation", the band's 1969 debut album, now at the centre of a lavish new reissue due out on 9 October via Cherry Red and Esoteric Recordings. Original guitarist Anthony Phillips also took part in the project: alongside Banks, Gabriel and Rutherford, he oversaw and approved the new edition of the album, which will be released in three formats: a deluxe box set with four CDs and a Blu-ray, a double CD, and a double vinyl.
The reissue
At the heart of the reissue is a new mix by Stephen W. Tayler, who set out to bring the young band's performances further to the forefront, scaling back the orchestral arrangements that characterised the original release. Tayler has also produced new mixes in stereo, 5.1 Surround Sound and Dolby Atmos.
The deluxe box set reconstructs that early chapter of Genesis' history in remarkable depth. Alongside the new album mix, it includes remastered versions of the original mono and stereo mixes, singles from the period, rare recordings, and an entire disc devoted to demos recorded in 1967 and 1968, four of which are previously unreleased and have been remixed by Tayler.
The Blu-ray, meanwhile, features "From Genesis To Revelation" plus four bonus tracks in Dolby Atmos, 5.1 Surround Sound and 96kHz/24-bit stereo. Rounding out the disc is footage filmed on 14 April 2026 at AIR Studios, showing Banks, Gabriel and Rutherford listening back to the material and recalling the album's genesis. The box set also includes a 68-page illustrated book featuring an essay by Jon Dann and contributions from the four original members involved in the project.
The double vinyl edition will also come with extra content: a bonus 12-inch EP featuring new mixes of "A Winter's Tale", "One Eyed Hound", "Image Blown Out" and the previously unreleased "Visions Of Angels".
The record
"From Genesis To Revelation" documents a line-up still far removed from what would, just a few years later, become one of the pillars of British progressive rock. The album came about when Gabriel, Banks, Rutherford and Phillips were still teenage students at Charterhouse School, discovered by producer Jonathan King. Steve Hackett and Phil Collins had not yet joined the band, and drumming duties during the album sessions were split between Chris Stewart and John Silver.
Released in March 1969, the debut found the band still searching for its own identity, with pop and psychedelic songs onto which King had strings and horns overdubbed. The real turning point would come the following year with "Trespass", when Genesis' sound began to take on the more recognisable traits of their progressive era.
