Melvins and Butthole Surfers join forces for a new supergroup: meet Gatta Morta. Listen to “Black Hall”

A new supergroup has emerged from the heavy and psychedelic scene, courtesy of this supergroup: it's called Gatta Morta, and it brings together musicians from Melvins, Butthole Surfers and Mr. Phylzzz. The band debuted with the single "Black Hall", the first taste of their debut Ep "Burn Witch Burn". The lineup features Buzz Osborne, longtime singer, guitarist and founder of Melvins, Butthole Surfers bassist JD Pinkus, Melvins drummer Coady Willis, and Mr. Phylzzz guitarist and singer Clinton Jacob.

"It's always the right time for the world to welcome a new heavy, strange band," Osborne said. "The idea for Gatta Morta came to me during last autumn's tour. I realized I absolutely had to put together a band with these three musicians: it felt like the most natural thing in the world." The Melvins frontman describes the project as "a decidedly bizarre rock that needed to exist."
JD Pinkus is equally enthusiastic: "It had been way too long since I'd written a heavy album from scratch with musicians of this caliber, with styles as different as they are complementary. And we've only just started scratching the surface of what we can do."
Clinton Jacob, the mastermind behind Chicago noise-pop duo Mr. Phylzzz, explained that the collaboration grew out of years of friendship with Osborne: "Over the past few years we've shared several shows together, and Buzz even played guitar on a Mr. Phylzzz track. When they asked me to join Gatta Morta I was speechless, but I was one hundred percent ready."
Coady Willis offered a more cryptic take, describing the band's music as "an asymmetrical psychedelic war waged in the name of romanticism."

Released on Amphetamine Reptile Records, the Ep "Burn Witch Burn" contains four tracks: "Taco Bellboy", "Victims Of The Universe", "Black Hall" and "Clear Smoke". According to the official press release, the record alternates granite-heavy riffs with warped psychedelic passages, forging a sound that recalls its members' past while venturing into entirely new territory.
Gatta Morta's arrival comes at a particularly busy time for everyone involved: Melvins released the album "Thunderball" in 2025, while Butthole Surfers recently put out "After The Astronaut", the album recorded in 1998 and left unreleased until now, the band's first record in twenty-five years.
