Supergroups take center stage in the new episode of Rock in Onda, the show hosted by Claudio Fabretti every Wednesday from 12 to 2pm on the web frequencies of Radio Città Aperta (www.radiocittaperta.it).
From Cream to CSN&Y, from Asia to the 801 and U.K. experiments, from This Mortal Coil to Lords Of The New Church, from Traveling Wilburys to Raconteurs all the way to the cold fusion of Franz Ferdinand–Sparks (FFS) and the Italian-American Ardecore: the strange case of the supergroups, "all-star" creatures whose glory is often fleeting but which can still leave their mark. We tell their story through a 23-track playlist. Listen online.

O Superband: borrowing the title of an old Laurie Anderson song (the glorious "O Superman"), we introduce the thorny subject of supergroups, bizarre all-star creatures, hybrid and uneven by nature, often doomed to a fleeting existence, but not infrequently capable of leaving their mark on rock history. While often these were mere opportunistic operations, cash-grabs based on a simple sum of stars, in many other cases the alchemy worked, sometimes even laying the groundwork for a saga with far greater longevity. So we retrace, through 23 tracks, some of the most significant superband experiences: from the hard-blues ace trio of Cream to Eric Clapton's subsequent adventure alongside Steve Winwood in Blind Faith, from the magical folk-rock communion of Crosby Stills Nash & Young to the friendship between George Harrison and Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison celebrated in the Traveling Wilburys, from the dazzling and ill-fated trajectory of Lords Of The New Church to the "all-star" ethereal This Mortal Coil and the all-female lineup of Breeders, from the "post-prog" experiments of 801, U.K., Emerson Lake & Powell and Asia to the well-oiled war machine of Nick Cave (Bad Seeds), from the new-romantic apotheosis of Visage and Arcadia all the way to the more recent experiences of pop-rock stars such as Mike Patton (Fantomas), Damon Albarn (The Good, The Bad And The Queen), Jack White (Raconteurs) and Alex Turner (The Last Shadow Puppets), and to the successful cold fusion of Franz Ferdinand–Sparks (FFS). And there's no shortage of an Italian appendix, dedicated to Ardecore, with their Roman stornelli brought up to date with the post-rock of Geoff Farina (Karate).
