The nominations for the 71st David di Donatello awards have been announced. Leading the pack is “Le città di pianura” by Francesco Sossai, with 16 nominations, many of them in the major categories (best film, director and screenplay), followed by “La grazia” by Paolo Sorrentino with 14.
In the music categories, a varied lineup brings together Italian composers and international names. For best composer, alongside established figures such as Mauro Pagani (“Le assaggiatrici“) and Fabio Massimo Capogrosso (“Primavera”), there's room for Franco Amurri (“La città proibita”), the KRANO project for “Le città di pianura” and the duo made up of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, already established on the international stage, nominated for “Queer“. On the best original song front, the shortlist of five alternates between singer-songwriter craft and pop forays: Brunori Sas writes and performs “Arrivederci tristezza”, while Checco Zalone lends his voice to “Buen Camino”, co-written with Antonio Iammarino. Rounding out the category are Levante with “Follemente”, KRANO with the track “Ti” for “Le città di pianura” and the international collaboration between Reznor, Ross and Caetano Veloso for “Vaster than Empires”.
A musician, Pierpaolo Capovilla, frontman of Teatro degli Orrori, is meanwhile in the running for Best Actor, thanks to his performance in “Le città di pianura“.
The race for best film comes down to five titles: “Cinque secondi”, “Fuori”, “La grazia”, “Le assaggiatrici” and “Le città di pianura” itself, which together account for most of the heavyweight nominations.
On the acting front, the nominees for best actor include Valerio Mastandrea (“Cinque secondi”), Claudio Santamaria (“Il nibbio”), Toni Servillo (“La grazia”), as well as Pierpaolo Capovilla and Sergio Romano for “Le città di pianura”. Among the best actress nominees are Valeria Bruni Tedeschi (“Duse“), Barbara Ronchi (“Elisa“), Valeria Golino (“Fuori”), Aurora Quattrocchi (“Gioia mia”), Anna Ferzetti (“La grazia”) and Tecla Insolia (“Primavera”).
For best international film, the selection includes “I'm Still Here” by Walter Salles, “The Voice of Hind Rajab” by Kaouther Ben Hania, “The Brutalist” by Brady Corbet, “A Simple Accident” by Jafar Panahi and “One Battle After Another” by Paul Thomas Anderson.
