CSI in Alba 30 years on: the setlist and a report from the concert at the Maratona Fenogliana

09-09-2026

Thirty years after the historic concert of October 5, 1996 at the Chiesa di San Domenico, CSI – Consorzio Suonatori Indipendenti have returned to Alba with the classic lineup fully reunited. Giovanni Lindo Ferretti, Massimo Zamboni, Gianni Maroccolo, Ginevra Di Marco, Francesco Magnelli and Giorgio Canali brought the songs of Consorzio Suonatori Indipendenti back to the town in the Langhe, in an evening that was part of the Maratona Fenogliana and inevitably charged with meaning.
The 1996 precedent occupies a special place in the band's history: that concert, dedicated to Beppe Fenoglio, would later become the album "La terra, la guerra, una questione privata". The return to Alba thus took on the value of a new meeting between the music of CSI, the memory of the Resistance, and the land told by the Piedmontese writer.

Piazza Medford welcomed an audience that had traveled from various parts of Italy for an event organized by the Municipality of Alba and the Centro Studi "Beppe Fenoglio", together with ANPI Alba-Bra and Portami Via Festival. A bond with the city's history that had also been underlined in the preceding days by local institutions and by Margherita Fenoglio, the writer's daughter, who recalled the significance the concert of thirty years ago has retained over time.
On stage, CSI ran through a good part of their catalogue. After opening with "In Viaggio" came "Occidente", "Del Mondo", "A Tratti", "Inquieto", "Cupe Vampe" and "Linea Gotica", one of the band's signature songs. There was also room for the tension of "Irata" and "Esco", the sonic openness of "Bolormaa" and "Blu", and then "Forma E Sostanza" and "Brace".

In the second part of the concert, the setlist further emphasized its historical and civic dimension with "Unità Di Produzione", "Depressione Caspica" and a reinterpretation of Franco Battiato's "E Ti Vengo A Cercare". "Montesole" was of course not missing, another central song in the C.S.I. imagination, tied to the concert held in Marzabotto in 2001 in memory of Don Giuseppe Dossetti.
The finale brought "Matrilineare", "Mimporta 'nasega" and "Buon Anno Ragazzi". Lo Stato Brado had opened the evening.

The return to Alba also confirmed the strength of the lineup, reunited twenty-five years after splitting up without turning the reunion into a mere nostalgia trip. For CSI, the choice of venues continues to be an integral part of the story: from Marzabotto and Monte Sole to the Langhe, the geography of their concerts still intertwines with memory, history and civic commitment. In Alba, thirty years on, another circle in the story of the Consorzio has closed.
