Thirteen years after “Tomorrow's Harvest“, Boards Of Canada return with new music. The Scottish duo had already been stoking anticipation in recent weeks, sending fans a mysterious VHS tape, releasing a short musical excerpt and officially announcing “Inferno”, the new album due out on May 29th. Now the first real taste of the record has arrived.
“Introit” and “Prophecy At 1420 MHz” are actually the album's first two tracks. The former works as an introduction: just thirty-six seconds, a brief atmospheric opening that sets the stage for the second piece. It's with “Prophecy At 1420 MHz” that the track really gets going, moving over a dark, slowed-down groove that recalls the techno-thriller soundtracks of the late Nineties, cut through by an unsettling synthetic voice that further ramps up the tension. It's a return that retains the sense of mystery and technological paranoia typical of Boards Of Canada, updating it with a starker, more menacing production. The track comes with a video directed by Robert Beatty, the man behind some of the most recognizable artwork of the last twenty years in experimental and electronic music: you can watch it below.
“Inferno” will be released on May 29th via Warp Records. Seven international previews, the “Inferno Sessions”, are scheduled for May 22nd, hosted between Tokyo, Berlin, Barcelona, London, Glasgow, New York and Los Angeles. The following day, numerous record shops around the world will host further listening parties dedicated to the album. “Inferno” unfolds across eighteen tracks, with a sequence of titles that dwells on cosmic, spiritual and temporal coordinates, in keeping with the group's imagery.
