Today Black Keys return with the new single “You Got To Lose”, the first taste of their upcoming album “Peaches!”, out May 1st on Easy Eye Sound/Warner Records. The video, directed by E.J. McLeavey-Fisher, captures the energy of the surprise show the band played last month at Memphis's legendary juke joint Hernando's Hide-A-Way.

“Peaches!”, the duo's fourteenth studio album, gathers ten essential, visceral tracks. Dan Auerbach describes it as the band's most instinctive work since their 2002 debut, “The Big Come Up”. The record was born out of a difficult personal period, marked by the illness of Auerbach's father, who was staying at his home in Nashville. It was then that Patrick Carney, his bandmate and longtime friend, realized that getting back into the studio would be the most direct way to react. “We weren't working on an album”, Auerbach recalls. “We were just jamming, almost like it was something just for us. It was a tense, difficult time. My father's illness stripped away any desire to fuss over unnecessary details: I just felt the need to scream, that's all”.
Recorded with an unabashedly DIY approach, “Peaches!” returns to the philosophy of their early days: musicians in the same room, very few overdubs, live performances. It's also the first album mixed entirely by the band themselves since “Magic Potion”, released in 2006. “Everything was recorded live, vocals included, in a single take”, explains Patrick Carney. “Mixing it was tricky, but we wanted a raw, dirty, unfiltered sound”.
The songs reflect Auerbach and Carney's almost obsessive passion for vinyl collecting, fueled in recent years by their Record Hang DJ sets and an ongoing habit of listening and rediscovery. "I was digging for 45s to play at the Record Hangs", Auerbach recalls, "but sometimes I'd find a track and think it'd be fun to redo it live with Pat".
The cover of “Peaches!” features a shot by William Eggleston, the iconic Memphis photographer and a longtime touchstone for the band. The packaging design and art direction were handled by Michael Carney, Patrick's brother, previously awarded a Grammy for the cover of “Brothers”. The album will be available on vinyl, CD, cassette and digital formats.
In the coming months, Black Keys will headline the Gentilly Stage at the New Orleans Jazz Fest and play select dates at major summer festivals. Here's the tracklist for “Peaches!”.
