Beth Orton released "The Ground Above" a while back, an eight-minute track steeped in elegant art pop. Now it's been revealed that it's actually the title track and opening single of the British singer-songwriter's upcoming album, out June 26th on Partisan. Alongside today's announcement came a new single as well, titled "Waiting". The track opens as a stark, melancholy piano ballad: "I've been waiting for the hurting to stop/ I've been waiting for the punchline to drop", Orton sings in the opening lines, before the song morphs into a deceptively cheerful jazz cacophony (you can listen to it below).
For the album "The Ground Above", entirely self-produced, Beth Orton enlisted the help of a whole crew, including Nick Hakim, Tom Skinner, multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily, Sam Beste of Vernon Spring, drummers Chris Vatalaro (Antibalas, Radiohead) and Vishal Nayak (Nick Hakim), Paul Butler (The Bees and Michael Kiwanuka), trumpeter Christos Styliandes, bassist Tom Herbert and guitarist Dave Okumu.
Below is the full tracklist and cover art for "The Ground Above", plus the upcoming dates of Beth Orton's tour.
