Rolling Stone US's ranking of the 100 greatest punk albums of all time

19-05-2026

Rolling Stone magazine has embarked on an ambitious undertaking: selecting the 100 greatest punk albums of all time. A ranking you can compare with OndaRock's own.
The American publication introduced its new ranking with these remarks: “Punk rock began in 1976 in New York, when four Queens goofballs invented a mutant strain of bubblegum blitzkrieg. The revolution they inspired split the history of rock & roll in two. But even though punk rock was born as a form of negation — a call back to stripped-down, brutal simplicity — its musical variety and transformative emotional force were immediate and remain striking. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the influential self-titled debut by Ramones, we've compiled a list of the 100 greatest punk albums of all time,” writes Rolling Stone US, noting that while “Ramones” was punk rock's year zero, it didn't arrive without precedent: “that's why we've included essential precursors like Stooges, New York Dolls and Patti Smith, artists who were punk in spirit before the style even had a name. When punk exploded, it was a detonation of ideas and possibilities. Alongside Sex Pistols and Clash, Black Flag and Descendents, Bad Brains and Minor Threat, you'll find Gang Of Four blending funk rhythms with Marxist slogans, the goth chill of Joy Division, the existential country visions of Mekons, radical riot grrrl acts like Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney, the ska-punk of Rancid and Operation Ivy, multiplatinum pop-punk acts Green Day and Blink-182, and the new forms of hardcore from bands like Turnstile and Soul Glo.”

So here is the chart of the 100 best punk albums of all time, according to Rolling Stone US (full feature here). You can also find our own chart of the best punk albums of all time on OndaRock.
