Amanda Lear accuses Miley Cyrus: “She copied my ‘The Sphynx’ for ‘Redlights’” – Listen to the tracks compared

Amanda Lear vs. Miley Cyrus. The showgirl accuses the American pop star of copying “The Sphinx”, one of her most celebrated songs, released in 1978 and later included on the album “Never Trust A Pretty Face”. In the crosshairs is “Redlights”, the sixth track on “Bass Persuades”, Cyrus's new record out on September 18.
Lear herself was the first to raise the issue, with an ironic Instagram post: “Thank you Miley for this tribute to my song 'The Sphinx', I'm flattered”, she wrote, accompanying the message with the hashtags #ripoff and #copycat. It was actually some fans who first tipped her off, pointing out the similarities between the two tracks. “They contacted me saying: 'Amanda, you absolutely have to listen to this song, it's a disgrace'”, she recounted, adding jokingly that “fans always exaggerate a bit”.
Here below are the two tracks compared.

After listening to “Redlights”, Amanda Lear became convinced that the similarities were substantial. Speaking to Le Parisien, she explained that she had turned to her producer and record label to compare the two compositions. According to the singer, the analysis confirmed that both songs share the same melody and rhythmic structure, albeit with “Redlights” performed at a faster tempo. Lear also revealed that ChatGpt had reportedly been used for the comparison: “They analysed every single line of both songs with ChatGpt, and it's incredible what technology can do these days. And indeed, the melody and rhythm are the same. She changed the lyrics, obviously, but there's no denying it's the product of some serious inspiration”.

The matter could now move onto legal ground. Universal, which according to Lear holds the rights to “The Sphinx”, is expected to contact Miley Cyrus's label to clarify the situation. The artist, however, does not rule out an out-of-court solution: “Either we reach an agreement, or there will be a lawsuit that could drag on for a long time, as tends to happen in the United States. We could also simply ask her to credit me, to say that this song was inspired by Amanda Lear”.
For Lear the matter also has a personal side, given the special bond she has with “The Sphinx”, which she names as the favourite song from her favourite album. “It's a song that represents me a great deal, so it bothers me somewhat that it's been stolen. I'd rather people said they really liked my song. But for it to be shamelessly stolen, that I don't like at all”. Lear also claims that Cyrus already knew the song: “We know she's a fan of mine. She added my song to her Spotify playlist”.

Despite the accusations, Lear made clear that she is a fan of Miley Cyrus. The case inevitably recalls other controversies that have followed the American singer in the past, including the one over the alleged similarities between “Flowers” and “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor.
At the moment, Miley Cyrus and her entourage have not publicly responded to the accusations. “Redlights” appears on “Bass Persuades”, the American singer's tenth studio album, released on September 18, 2026 and made up of ten tracks.
