Primavera Sound turns 25! Since 2001, the frenetic history of Primavera Sound has moved forward unstoppably, minute by minute, in step with the evolution of contemporary music. Before we start imagining what the 25th edition of the festival will look like, it's worth remembering that every element of the line-up of Primavera Sound Barcelona 2027, also unveiled through a video directed by Guillem Cruells – produced by Vampire Films and post-produced by VETA, in collaboration with master stonemasons Barbany – celebrates a legacy carefully built over a quarter of a century. But what do we mean when we talk about legacy?
It refers to the countless extraordinary musical moments Barcelona has experienced over the course of the festival. To some of the most significant cultural events the city has witnessed this century. But above all, we're talking about the entire semantic landscape generated in real time across the 24 editions that have taken place so far: as happens in any close, lasting relationship, Primavera Sound and its audience communicate through a language all their own, as shown by the series of posts that have accompanied the countdown on the official Instagram profile in recent weeks.
Legacy is that intimate, partly invented language: an endless set of rules, references and subtexts that can only truly be understood within their own context. There are countless things that mean something different inside and outside Primavera Sound. And there are some that stop meaning what they used to mean the moment they come into contact with Primavera Sound. All of this shapes an inimitable imaginary. A universe that cannot be replicated, and one that will keep evolving from June 2 to 6, around this line-up of 151 artists and bands, dominated by a female presence, who are unmistakably part of the vocabulary of Primavera Sound.
The logo from the festival's first edition takes pride of place on the Primavera Sound Barcelona 2027 poster, even though, in truth, it wouldn't need to appear on either one for the festival's identity to be instantly recognizable. Looking back, that debut year — a single-day event with barely a dozen artists — charted a path with no shortcuts: the only way to get to Primavera Sound is through Primavera Sound.
A journey that next year will take us from Doechii, the supernova of the American rap scene who, propelled by the mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal and her iconic live performances, has pushed the genre's boundaries to become a truly versatile artist, making her Spanish debut; to Phoebe Bridgers, songwriter for an entire generation, now more than ever after the triumphant return marked by Lost Weekend, her hugely anticipated third album; to Irish heroes Fontaines D.C., utterly unstoppable on the eve of Dopamine Chamber, their new album, ready to crown their meteoric rise at Primavera Sound; to Massive Attack, set to cement their bond with the avant-garde by finally — and long-awaitedly! — making their festival debut; to Turnstile, so voracious that, thankfully, they never seem to have enough; to The Chemical Brothers, dance music legends whose story will cross paths with Primavera Sound's for the first time; to Robyn, the popstar's favourite popstar; to the chameleonic FKA twigs, set to unveil a brand-new show; to Bad Gyal, from Barcelona to the world with a suitcase full of anthems; and to Hayley Williams, a touchstone of female-fronted rock, shining in a line-up packed with women, after more than two decades spent fighting so that something like this wouldn't just remain a utopia. At least at Primavera Sound it isn't: women are unquestionably at the forefront of a line-up where gender balance is, once again, guaranteed.
This 25th edition at Parc del Fòrum will also feature Lola Young, with the echo of her hit Messy still ringing in our ears; Skrillex and Australian artist Ninajirachi, in a deeply evocative b2b set that will close the festival; indie icons Pavement; Slovak artist ADÉLA, who has emerged as this year's pop revelation; party professionals Prospa, still riding the wave of success that followed their summer hit Free Your Mind; Caroline Polachek, who keeps adding new dimensions to her captivating persona; that six-headed monster known as King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard; Bleachers led by the brilliant Jack Antonoff; the ever-enduring electronic music duo Underworld; enigmatic British rapper EsDeeKid; and ANOHNI, with her ability to fuse beauty and pain, on this occasion channelled into a special set made up of songs by her friend and collaborator Lou Reed.
Not even the poster's wide range of colours is enough to capture the endless Pantone spectrum of musical shades that Primavera Sound Barcelona 2027 can be broken down into. Where to start? With, for instance, all the colours of contemporary pop found in the area defined by Kim Petras, Tinashe, Shygirl, Theodora and Hearts2Hearts. More? Converge, Full of Hell, Castle Rat and Prostitute display the entire range of rock's most extreme forms. Even more? BICEP, Joy Orbison, Ibrahim Alfa Jnr and John Talabot help us grasp all the shades that club music encompasses today.
Meanwhile, the unusual appearance, at the age of 81, of Vashti Bunyan — a cult voice who has performed barely a dozen times in the last decade — will provide the perfect frame for bringing together different approaches to the singer-songwriter format: from chamber-pop icon Weyes Blood to Julien Baker, who picks her solo career back up after a nearly five-year hiatus, by way of Rebe, Dove Ellis, Guillem Gisbert and Bonnie “Prince” Billy, another artist who rarely performs at major festivals. After more than thirty years spent crafting his own take on the American tradition, he'll arrive at Parc del Fòrum for the very first time.
As always happens at Primavera Sound, this list of artists and bands implicitly contains a pattern that defines not only the multifaceted character of the festival, but also that of its audience. Jumping from one name to another, you can end up connecting dots that seemed millions of miles apart: after all, only here can the synth-pop delicacy of Metronomy coexist with the monolithic doom metal of Warning, the deconstructed ambient of Malibu with the proudly Southern hip-hop of JT, the unexpected flamenco love story between Carlos de Jacoba & Ciutat with the electronic mantras of Headache, the polyrhythmic rock of Don Caballero with the urban edge of Metrika, the industrial dance of Boy Harsher with the theatrical pop of Haute & Freddy.
Other connections are more direct, even if it's no less thrilling to watch them come to life. At Primavera Sound Barcelona 2027 you'll be able to follow both the vibrant digital post-pop ecosystem carried forward by Arca, underscores, Snow Strippers and AKRIILA, and the sounds that essentially shaped the festival's formative years, embodied by the indomitable Dinosaur Jr., by the reinvigorated DIIV, by Argentine troubadour Santiago Motorizado, by Gilla Band, who seem to be channelling the spirit of Mark E. Smith, and by three bands set to become new favourites of the Primavera community: Westside Cowboy, @ and Twisted Teens. Their presence, alongside that of other emerging artists such as Sophia Stel, ear and pablopablo, reinforces Primavera Sound's status as a stage where the future happens.
And when it comes to sounds closely tied to the festival's history, no one surpasses Bradford Cox, one of the artists who has performed the most times at Primavera Sound, both fronting Deerhunter and under his alias Atlas Sound. After seven long years during which he nearly vanished from public view, Cox will return to the psych-folk repertoire of Atlas Sound, adding himself to the long list of surprise appearances at Parc del Fòrum.
After a quarter of a century, Primavera Sound's distinctive language is really the sum of countless unique micro-languages. As if paying tribute to its own history, the festival will once again present a line-up of dozens of musical projects that sound like nothing else, including eccentric singer-songwriter Juana Molina, the unhinged electro-punk band Lip Critic, minimalism master Tirzah, and Jesu, one of the many sonic incarnations of experimental luminary Justin Broadrick.
These are artists and bands so peculiar they seem to exist in a dimension all their own, governed by their own rules and circumstances. Canadians Angine de Poitrine, who became the most famous math-rock band in history thanks to a spectacular internet-born plot twist. Producer Pole, a leading figure in German electronic music, who will present his 1 2 3 trilogy, essential to understanding the development of dub techno. mori and TRISTÁN!, the two most unconventional members of the rusia-idk collective. The hyperactive duo B0YG1RL, a rare meeting point between hedonism and avant-garde, who soundtrack the festival's promotional video. Mark Fell & RP Boo — respectively a veteran of abstract techno and the father of footwork — joined together for a new show. The fact that everyone sees Primavera Sound as the space where these norms and conditions can be reinvented is the result of 24 editions spent tirelessly exploring every possible corner.
Primavera's vocabulary also means knowing that, as inexhaustible a source of musical inspiration as this line-up already is, there's still much to discover about what next year's festival will bring. Primavera Sound Barcelona 2027 will take place from June 3 to 5, not counting the free opening day on Wednesday, June 2, and the closing electronic party, Primavera Bits, on Sunday, June 6, featuring three pioneers of electronic music: Richie Hawtin, Four Tet, and Dixon. The event will mark the very first time the three have come together anywhere in the world for an eight-hour journey of back-to-back sets.
Parc del Fòrum will host all of these activities as the epicentre of the festival, but various venues and spaces across Barcelona will welcome a complementary programme — still to be revealed — that will turn the 25th edition of Primavera Sound into a full week of music. In addition, Primavera Pro, Primavera Sound's meeting point for music industry professionals, will celebrate its 18th edition from June 2 to 5, debuting at its new DHub venue with a programme of conferences and showcases to be announced shortly.
