Summer 2026 has come to a close without a single smash hit capable of dominating everything and everyone. There was no song able to cut across radio, streaming, social media, beaches and town squares all at once, as used to happen until just a few years ago. In its place, a plurality of hits: some huge on streaming platforms, others driven by airplay, still others born at Sanremo and still going strong months later.
The picture emerges both from the sales data gathered by All Music Italy up to 26 August and from the awards handed out at RTL 102.5's Power Hits Estate. The two snapshots don't always line up: Fred De Palma dominated summer sales without ever once cracking EarOne's radio podium, while Pinguini Tattici Nucleari stood out as the clearest case of convergence between audience and radio.
The four tracks above 100,000 copies
"La testa gira" was the best-selling summer song, the only one to cross the platinum threshold according to the figures cited. A clear-cut result, but one built far from the logic of airplay: the track by Fred De Palma, Anitta and Emis Killa never once made it onto the radio chart's podium.
Right behind it, "Al mio paese" by Serena Brancale with Delia and Levante came close to platinum, confirming the impact of a formula that blends Mediterranean identity with contemporary pop. "Sorry Scusa Lo Siento" by Pinguini Tattici Nucleari instead struck a rare balance: over 134,000 copies and eleven appearances on the EarOne podium, two of them at number one. It was the outright winning song of Power Hits Estate 2026.
The fourth case is Ultimo. "Romantica" topped 111,000 copies without much radio or TV support, a sign of the loyalty of an audience that follows the Roman singer-songwriter regardless of season or playlists.
The top tracks, between collaborations and surprises
Collaborations worked, but not automatically. "Buon vento" by Jovanotti and Alfa and "Canto d'amore" by Angelina Mango and Marco Mengoni both came close to gold, with the latter especially strong on radio: at the Power Hits Estate it received the PMI Award for the most-played independent single.
Among the most notable surprises is Fulminacci: "Maledetto me", a song inherently at odds with the summer-smash formula, topped 65,000 copies. "Bossa Nostra" by Gaia also posted a solid result without chasing the usual beach-pop clichés.
Samurai Jay, while unable to match the performance of "Ossessione" with "Flamenco Paranoia", confirmed a sizeable following. But the real phenomenon of the year remains "Ossessione" itself: introduced at Sanremo, it kept growing throughout the summer, surpassing 400,000 copies in the Power Hits Estate count and winning the FIMI award for best-selling Italian single between 29 May and 27 August. The paradox is plain to see: out of nearly forty singles built specifically for summer, the most enduring track came from the Festival.
Radio and streaming: two different summers
Radio airplay pushed eleven different tracks to the top over seventeen weeks; streaming, by contrast, showed a far more stable hierarchy. Hence the sense of a fragmented summer, one with no shared soundtrack but rather a string of songs each winning out in its own arena.
The ranking of tracks with the most appearances on the EarOne podium confirms this gap:
Pinguini Tattici Nucleari took home RTL's top award thanks to the crossover between airplay and public vote. "Sorry Scusa Lo Siento" is also an anomaly by tradition's standards: Riccardo Zanotti has openly claimed the idea of a summer song that breaks the mould, free of the usual repertoire of sunshine, beaches and breeziness, and more interested in an ambiguous mood and a theme of miscommunication.
Cases below expectations
Flops need to be read against expectations and the promotion they received. The Kolors enjoyed strong radio support: "Rolling Stones" stayed on the EarOne podium for five weeks, but sales plateaued at around 34,000 copies. The same gap between exposure and audience response applies to Tommaso Paradiso's "Agitare Coca Cola" and, to a different extent, the Rovazzi-Arisa-Nino D'Angelo trio: "La Costiera Amalfitana" had a lineup that looked very strong on paper, but it never turned into a collective moment.
The biggest disappointments come from artists who, over the years, had made the summer single their natural territory. Baby K stalls at 6,600 copies with "Tucamacarena"; Elettra Lamborghini tops 33,000 with "Bam Bam Bambina", but remains far from her previous peaks. Ditonellapiaga, coming off a third-place finish at Sanremo and strong radio traction with "How annoying!", doesn't get past 11,000 copies with "Businessman".
Even the pairing of Giorgia and Tiziano Ferro on "Superstar" didn't translate into a big chart result: the track reached 2.7 million streams on Spotify and first place on the EarOne independent chart, but only peaked at number 91 on the Fimi chart. Even more modest was the trajectory of "Hit Parade" by Gianni Morandi and Alessandra Amoroso, released once the season was already underway and unable to build any real promotional momentum.
Summer 2026, then, doesn't mark the end of the tormentone, but rather the end of the single supreme hit dominating the season. Sales crown Fred De Palma, radio and audiences crown Pinguini Tattici Nucleari, the most enduring track comes from Sanremo with Samurai Jay, while Sal Da Vinci picks up the Siae award for "Rossetto e Caffè", the most-performed song at Italian live music events.
