Gianni Morandi

Gianni Morandi, with a career spanning over six decades, has established himself as one of the most popular singers in Italian music.

Born on December 11, 1944 in Monghidoro, in the province of Bologna, Morandi found success in the 1960s as a very young performer of melodic pop, becoming an idol for generations of fans. He debuted with the single “Andavo a 100 all’ora” (1962), which immediately launched him onto the Italian music scene. The song, like those that followed, was marked by a fresh, lively sound that became Morandi's trademark, always paired with a young, dynamic stage presence.

In the years that followed, Morandi released a string of hits that established him as one of the leading figures in Italian pop music. Songs such as “Fatti mandare dalla mamma” (1965), “In ginocchio da te” (1964) and “C’era un ragazzo che come me amava i Beatles e i Rolling Stones” (1966) remain among his most iconic tracks, blending melodic pop and youthful sounds with lyrics that often dealt with universal themes such as love and freedom, as on the eponymous album “Gianni Morandi” (1966).

In the 1970s, Morandi remained a key figure on the Italian music scene, although, with the rise of politically engaged singer-songwriters and new musical movements, his “boy next door” image struggled to stay in the spotlight. The 70's were years of protest, aimed at everything Morandi represented, namely the old values swept aside by new trends and new American idols. These were dark years for Gianni, who even agreed to take part in Sanremo, a competition he had previously turned down, where he placed fourth with “Vado a lavorare”.

On February 12, 1974, his son Marco was born, but by then Morandi's career seemed to be winding down, at just thirty years old. In '76 he tasted success again with “Sei forte papà”, the theme song of “Rete Tre”, a TV show in which Gianni took on the roles of dancer and comedian, as well as singer, of course. The record climbed the charts, reaching number one and selling around a million copies. But Gianni had by then decided to step away from the spotlight and devote himself to his family, taking the opportunity to study music a little, with an eye toward a possible future as a conductor.

This period also marked the start of his film career, with movies such as “La scuola” (1975), which showcased his versatility as an entertainer. Among the most significant albums of the period are “La mia gente” (1975) and “Uno su mille ce la fa” (1976).

After a period of personal and romantic crisis, in 1980 Morandi met Mogol, who rekindled his enthusiasm and his desire to start singing again. “Canzoni stonate” is the song that opened a new successful chapter in his career. Critics took notice of him in 1983, during his third appearance at Sanremo, where he won acclaim with “La mia nemica amatissima”. That same year he reached the top of the charts with “Grazie perché”, sung as a duet with Ami Stewart. In 1984 he released the album “Immagine Italiana” and found further success with the TV drama “Voglia di volare”, followed the next year by “Voglia di cantare”. Gianni, however, dreamed of a comeback on the charts, and that same year released a new album, “Uno su mille”, from which the famous title track is taken.

After his big comeback in the early 1980s, Morandi continued to reinvent himself with the album “Immagine italiana” (1984), produced by Alessandro Blasetti and Al Garrison, with arrangements by Michele Santoro. The lead single in particular stood out, “Nel silenzio splende”, written by Giancarlo Bigazzi, which would later also be covered by Milva. In 1986, Morandi won the Premio Tenco for best performer. The following year he won the Sanremo Festival with “Si può dare di più”, performed together with Tozzi and Ruggeri.

On July 4, '88, Morandi set off on tour with his friend Lucio Dalla, a journey that produced a live album which sold a million copies. The artistic partnership with Dalla was still going strong in 1990, when Lucio decided to produce and write Morandi's new album "Varietà", which won over both audiences and critics thanks to tracks like the title song and "Bella signora". In '92, driven by a desire to get involved in production as well, came "Morandi Morandi", followed by a new tour of more than two hundred dates, all sold out.

In 1995 he returned to Sanremo with a song written by Pasquale Panella titled "In Amore": Gianni sang it as a duet with Barbara Cola, finishing in second place. The album "Morandi" was released, on which the singer from Monghidoro made room for young songwriters, and among the musicians was his son Marco.

After the birth of Pietro, his third son, in August '97, a new LP also came out, "Celeste azzurro e blu", which for the first time was not followed by a tour. Between '97 and '98, Gianni released a compilation, "30 volte Morandi", featuring three new tracks, with all the songs in the anthology rearranged and reinterpreted. In '99 a new television venture awaited him, "C'era un ragazzo", a show hosted together with his son Marco.

In 2000 Morandi was back at Sanremo, where he performed a song by Eros Ramazzotti, "Innamorato", which placed third. It was Ramazzotti himself who produced his new album, "Come fa bene l'amore", this time followed by a tour that closed with excellent results. In 2002, Gianni brought together celebrated songwriters and rising talents to make a new record titled "L'amore ci cambia la vita", which served as the soundtrack to his new Saturday-night RaiUno show tied to the lottery, "Uno di noi", which he hosted.

In the new millennium, Gianni Morandi has continued to release numerous albums, including "Morandi 50" (2011), "Canzoni da non perdere" (2013), and "D'amore d'autore" (2018). In 2021 he returned to the music scene with the album "L'amore ci salverà", which marked a renewed burst of musical output and a certain reflection on the passing of time, without ever losing his energy and charisma.

Besides music, Gianni Morandi is also known for his commitment to television and his role as a host. He has successfully and elegantly presented numerous programs, including editions of "Tutti insieme", "Gran Premio della canzone italiana" and other hit shows, always displaying his natural charm and talent for entertainment.

In 2017 his new album came out, made up of nine tracks, eight of them new and one cover ("Onda su onda" by Paolo Conte, sung as a duet with Fiorella Mannoia).

Four years later he released the single "L'allegria", written for him by Jovanotti, who also penned "Apri tutte le porte", the song with which he returned to compete at the Sanremo Festival in 2022.

Over the years, Morandi has managed to consolidate his popularity, always staying close to his fans, helped also by an attentive presence on social media.
