Paolo Benvegnù - The Story of a Fragile Poet

Let's retrace the career and work of the late Milanese singer-songwriter, from his beginnings with Scisma to the feats of his mature years, up to "È inutile parlare d'amore"

by Valerio D'Onofrio

Milanese musician Paolo Benvegnù began his career with Scisma, an alt-rock band that left its mark on Italy's 1990s. After embodying part of the country's alternative spirit, in 2004 he launched a solo career that would go on to bring him immense satisfaction. Over twenty years as a solo artist, Paolo Benvegnù perfectly embodied the figure of the modern singer-songwriter who has no certainties to sing and no truths to shout, but is instead marked by his own fragility in the face of a world too complex to be truly understood. Across his albums, Benvegnù conjured up countless places seen simultaneously as cages and as havens from the hardship of existence, places of reflection where one can only keep acknowledging one's own inability to explain the world around us — effectively positioning himself in total opposition to today's world, where shouting false truths with unbearable arrogance has become the norm.

A journey through fragility

Album after album, Benvegnù built an imaginary geography of loneliness, moving from the city to the sea, then to the hotel and finally to outer space. Looked at closely, his trajectory amounts to a gradual retreat from the world. The sea of concrete our society is immersed in — whether it's a city apartment block or a grey hotel — remains his most prophetic and still-relevant vision.

Tiny, Fragile Films (2004), the debut that already fully contains Benvegnù's philosophy, is thus the story of someone who "digs into the earth with bare hands" or who "swims in a frozen sea". "Il mare verticale" is already a manifesto of sorts ("Io lascio che le cose passino e mi sfiorino perché non sono in grado di comprenderle"), a sign of the fragility of a man alone amid incomprehensible chaos. The themes of life slipping away without leaving a trace in memory ("Il sentimento delle cose") and of days passing one after another without real happiness ("Brucio") are central to Benvegnù's poetics. By now the music has little to do with '90s rock in the commonly understood sense, but stands out for a production style so attentive to detail that it recalls the most minimal Talk Talk.

The Lips (2008), arriving a full four years later, is a transitional work, more optimistic and less introspective, with generally more frenetic rhythms. Love becomes a central theme, perhaps the only remaining anchor to hold on to. At times Benvegnù revisits his experiences from the '90s ("La schiena"), at others he loses himself in impossible loves marked by absence and the impossibility of communication ("La distanza"), with quirky rhythms reminiscent of Radiohead, as in "Amore santo e blasfemo" and especially "La peste", split into two parts, moving from a typically Benvegnù opening to an alienating free-jazz conclusion.

The following year, the new EP 500 (2009) creates a new bridge to what would come next, foreshadowed by the fragility of "Superstiti".

Hermann (2011) opens a new cycle that would flow into the following albums. Many tracks feature just voice and guitar with string backdrops, alternating with alternative pop production. The metaphor of life as a journey across a sea of concrete grows ever more structured ("Achab in New York", "Il pianeta perfetto", "Il mare è bellissimo").
At times fragility gives way to anger, but it's only a cry in the desert ("Date fuoco").

Earth Hotel (2014) is rightly one of his most celebrated works. The sound has by now reached its fullest solidity, deep in post-rock territory between Talk Talk and Bark Psychosis. The world seen as an immense concrete hotel, where thousands of different stories intersect, is already a metaphor that gathers up all his previous ideas.
Tracks like "Nello spazio profondo" or "Una nuova innocenza" are a perfect synthesis of this.

Benvegnù had found the perfect formula for communicating with his audience, which makes it easier, from this point on, to understand albums like H3+ (2017), almost an interstellar trip in which the hotel of Earth Hotel becomes a lone spaceship fleeing into space, perhaps the only place left to be saved.
Among the ten tracks, standouts include the poetry of "Victor Neuer", the piano sketches of "Olovisione in parte terza", the dark blues of "Boxes" and the magnificent sound of "Slow Parsec Slow", featuring the sax of Steven Brown of Tuxedomoon.

Dell'odio dell'innocenza (2020) reveals a decided pessimism toward humanity and the societies it builds everywhere, all bearing the same traits. While the production is similar to that of previous works, the words now turn to stone ("Pietre", "Nelle stelle"). Concepts like "il silenzio è la verità", "il mondo che vedete non esiste", "non c'è niente da salvare" are bricks forming a wall that now separates Benvegnù from a false society made of "manifesti elettorali". The triptych "Infinito", a place to escape reality, represents one of his musical and poetic high points.

In 2021 and 2022 the Milanese singer-songwriter released two collections of reworked tracks, Delle inutili premonizioni – Vol. 1 (2021) and Delle inutili premonizioni – Vol. 2 (2022). The second volume in particular, made up of reinterpretations of new wave tracks by Joy Division, New Order, Roxy Music, Tears For Fears and The Psychedelic Furs, highlights his origins and brings out the roots of his aesthetic.

The last EP of his career is Solo fiori (2023), five tracks that confirm his crystalline poetics while also offering some unflattering images of contemporary Italy, from which Benvegnù seems to be drifting ever further away ("Italy pornografica").

È inutile parlare d'amore (2024) in a sense closes a circle, perhaps even casting doubt on love itself, which once might have represented a safe harbour, or perhaps underlining how love — being seemingly useless (it generates no profit, the only measure of value recognised today), untethered from the notion of usefulness in a society obsessed with earnings — is precisely for that reason truly free and uncorrupted by greed. Featuring Brunori Sas ("L'oceano") and Neri Marcorè ("27/12"), È inutile parlare d'amore (winner of the 2024 Targa Tenco) is an album in which Benvegnù seems to be trying to reach out to a different audience, though his hermetic lyrics and musical consistency make that mission a tough one.

A few months later, with Tiny, Fragile Films – Reloaded (2024), he on one hand returned to his origins, and on the other received a tribute from a large swathe of Italian music (Dente, Piero Pelù, Irene Grandi, Motta, Paolo Fresu, Giovanni Truppi and others), hinting at a possible new phase in his artistic career.

A sad farewell

On December 31, 2024, news of Paolo Benvegnù's sudden death shocked fans of Italian music. He left us at just 59 years old, having earned less recognition than he deserved. Only the night before, he had been a guest of Stefano Bollani on the Rai 3 show “Via dei Matti nº 0”.
