The Weeknd is a Canadian artist (born in Toronto on February 16, 1990) who has managed to set a new standard for mainstream pop by filtering it through R&B and hip-hop sounds, achieving huge worldwide success.
The trilogy gathering his three successful mixtapes, "House Of Balloons", "Thursday" and "Echoes Of Silence", shot straight to the top of the charts. His debut LP "Kiss Land" came out in 2013. Two years later came "Earned It (Fifty Shades of Grey)", which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song and won the Grammy for Best R&B Performance. The video for the track was directed by the same director as the "Fifty Shades of Grey" film, and also features its star, Dakota Johnson. The Oscar-nominated track appears on the tracklist of the album "Beauty Behind The Madness": quadruple Platinum, and winner of a Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album.
In 2016 came "Starboy", with which The Weeknd won another Grammy in the same category, making history as the first artist to win that award twice.
In 2018, The Weeknd released “My Dear Melancholy”, a 6-track project that debuted at number one on the Billboard Top 200 for the third consecutive time: “Pray For Me” feat. Kendrick Lamar was featured in the trailer for “Black Panther”, the Oscar-winning film.
In 2020, “Blinding Lights”, a track steeped in Eighties synth flavor, became another worldwide smash. It hit number one in over thirty countries and soundtracked the Mercedes-Benz EQC ad campaign. It was the song of 2020, landing third on the Spotify Daily Global Chart with nearly 2 billion streams. The single propelled the album “After Hours”, released in March 2020, to success, eventually racking up 190 million streams on Spotify and 53 million views on YouTube. With “After Hours”, The Weeknd held the number 1 spot on the Billboard 200 for 4 consecutive weeks, setting another record: he became the first artist to top the Billboard 200, the Hot 100, and the Artist 100 simultaneously. With these numbers, “After Hours” is the number 1 R&B streaming album of all time, followed by “Starboy” at number 2.
Over the course of his career, The Weeknd has placed 9 tracks in the Top 10 of the Hot 100.
In 2022 he released his new album “Dawn Fm“.
