The best singles of the week

From Paul Weller to PJ Harvey, from Prince to Beth Gibbons

Paul Weller – “Rise Up Singing”

Paul Weller has released a new single, taken from the forthcoming album “66”, the seventeenth of his solo career, out May 24 via Solid Bond/Universal, three years on from his previous “Fat Pop (Volume 1)”.

After the first single “Soul Wandering”, with Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream, comes now “Rise Up Singing”, a track written together with Dr. Robert (Blow Monkeys), with an orchestral sweep that recalls the Modfather's early solo work.

Prince – “United States Of Division”

Twenty years after the release of the celebrated album “Musicology”, NPG Records and Paisley Park Enterprises, in collaboration with Sony Music Entertainment, have released for the first time on streaming platforms the track “United States of Division”, the B-side of the single “Cinnamon Girl”. “United States Of Division” is a protest song in which Prince boldly confronts the social and political problems that have plagued the United States and continue to do so today.

Depeche Mode – “People Are Good”

Depeche Mode have released the video for the single “People Are Good”, taken from their latest album “Memento Mori”, out this past March. The clip, directed by Rich Hall, arrives alongside the release of a series of remixes, a digital package of five new versions of the track reworked by Alessandro Cortini, Ludwig A.F., SiGNL, Obskür and IndiraPaganotto.

Dolly Parton – “Southern Accents”

A touching country version that transforms the rock energy of “Southern Accents” into a mournful ballad, with an ever-timeless Dolly Parton stealing the show. This is the first track lifted from the tribute album to Tom Petty, “Petty Country”, out June 21st on Big Machine in collaboration with the Petty Estate. “I was lucky enough to know Tom over the years,” Parton said in a statement. “He's an iconic artist and an important songwriter. I'm truly honored to be part of this special album and to share my version of one of Tom's best songs, 'Southern Accents'.” Watch the video for the song below.

Beth Gibbons – “Reaching Out”

As anticipation builds for her new album “Lives Outgrown”, out May 17th on Domino, Beth Gibbons, the voice of Portishead, has shared a second track from the record, following “Floating On A Moment”, released back in February. The new single is called “Reaching Out” and comes with an interactive video created by visual artist Weirdcore (who has made videos for Radiohead, Aphex Twin and others).

PJ Harvey – “Eugene Alone”

PJ Harvey has released a demo recording of “Eugene Alone”, a song written together with Ben Power for the new stage production “London Tide”. Written from the perspective of the character Eugene Wrayburn (played by Jamael Westman), the lyrics express the guilt of being caught up in a love triangle.
