Sam Shackleton has for years been one of the most eclectic figures on the international electronic scene, one of the leading exponents of the Dubstep movement, also fuelled by the releases of his own label, Skull Disco. With "Euphoria Bound", Shackleton delivers a deeply hypnotic work, a technological safari capable of merging ancestral impulses with futuristic clubbing, ten tracks that lead the listener into a virtual jungle, where the English producer's compositions once again make room for groove. The sound is dark, carrying the flavour of London's most underground clubs, but "Euphoria Bound" aims to be recognised not so much as a collection of dance music, but as a treatise on modern psychedelic music.
Tribal percussion, chopped-up samples, dub interference, spectral voices, fragmented loops: Shackleton sets out to challenge the listener, while still offering plenty of areas of comfort. Indeed, though the atmosphere is anything but reassuring, it never becomes particularly forbidding, a journey that yields genuinely excellent moments, especially on tracks 2, 3 and 5, "Philistine Wavelength", "Contagious Illusion" and above all "The Unbeliever's Pulse", even though the lead single ended up being the comparatively sunnier (so to speak...) "Crushing Realities". A series of Afrocentric, rhythm-driven rituals, where the word Dubstep never quite disappears, kept in the background, useful in shaping a sound design rich in detail, but without resorting to the easy seduction of the drop.
Ethnic influences, esoteric explorations, Indian echoes (present in "Elemental Dream", and even more so in the closing mantra "Buried And Irretrievable"), post-modern exoticisms, a well-defined musical cosmos with no fixed boundaries, one that doesn't give up jazz's improvisational, experimental spirit or even a tremolo guitar, woven into the coils of "The Dream In Fragments". An aesthetic quest that could be filed under ethno-Dubstep, not without a touch of ambient rarefaction, but this time packaged in a form driven by rhythm. Positive vibrations for all those who love exploring sonic territories beyond the classic boundaries of electronic music.
