HOSTIA PEDAGÓGICA - Homo Lamentáblis

2026 (Limbo Starr)
garage-revival, post-punk

In Spanish, Hostia Pedagogica is roughly like saying an educational smack, that pedagogical slap given — or rather used to be given (these days you never know), to a kid out of control to bring them back in line. This playful Catalan trio, made up of Xavier “Java” Javaloyas (guitar and vocals), Brian San Onofre (drums and backing vocals) and Jordi Iglesias (bass and backing vocals), chose exactly this name and, with this debut album, delivers one good and ironic smack to the “Homo lamentabilis” that gives the record its title. That is, to the clueless keyboard clowns who infest social media and similar platforms and, worse still, the ballot box.

It's no coincidence that “Nativo de turno”, the opening track of this post-punk debut, starts with a fake mic-check that gradually turns into an invitation to fact-check, a practice not exactly widespread among serial immigrant-blamers, goaded by a lashing dose of punk. It's one of the many theatrical coups on a record that makes irony about the tragic current state of populist drift and disinformation its keystone, alongside the slashing guitar riffs and punk rhythm section.
The Barcelona band's musical approach is hardly original, drawing clearly on both The Fall and The Damned as well as contemporaries like Idles and Viagra Boys, but the trio wields these stylistic tropes with real force and effectiveness. There's also a surprising resemblance, especially in the cyclical riffs and Java's psychotic sprechgesang, probably unintentional, to our own CCCP — just listen to “Altas Capacidades” to hear it.

Back home, the anti-work anthem “Abajo con el trabajo” and the unhinged “Estás roto” are already minor punk classics, while “Vendo manual” is probably the track destined to set live shows ablaze.
Primavera regulars especially should take note of this name, because even though the band isn't on the bill for the upcoming edition, they're closely tied to the festival's circuit and radio stations, and sooner or later their paths might cross.
