ELA MINUS - DÍA

With a background as a drummer in various punk bands and a prestigious degree from the Berklee College of Music, Ela Minus embarked on a career as an electronic music producer roughly a decade ago. Moving between club music and singer-songwriter territory, the Colombian artist has built a distinctive sound, culminating in her excellent 2020 LP, "acts of rebellion". Now, nearly five years on and after an intense period of musical exploration, her new compositions transform the nocturnal aura of that earlier record into a kaleidoscope of metallic, sharp-edged, abrasive sounds.

"DÍA" is an explosive, exhilarating record, above all because Ela alternates moments of calm, synth arpeggios, violent accelerations and sudden implosions, sometimes within the same track. That's the case with "QQQQ", the album's centerpiece, which, despite the apocalyptic desolation surrounding it, lets a synthetic garden sprout, becoming the setting for a dance capable of generating hope and the possibility of social change. Fire, destruction and rebirth run through "DÍA", outlining its contradictory impulses between abandonment, introspection, self-definition and a call to collective resistance. Aware that her presence as a musician from the Global South on the roster of a prestigious Western record label also carries political weight, Ela Minus keeps making music whose transformative force can break through club walls and overwhelm the consciousness of those who listen.
