BARKER - Stochastic Drift

2025 (Smalltown Supersound)
idm

Sam Barker builds his world on calculated chance, what Iannis Xenakis called stochastic. In the case of “Stochastic Drift”, the spell of aleatory sound becomes a reflection of human uncertainties and the shadows of the post-pandemic era. The artist meditates on his own vulnerability and on an existence suspended between unemployment and self-rediscovery. He does so through his drumless techno, which had already emerged as his mother tongue on the luminous, enveloping “Utility” back in 2019.

Today, Barker shapes self-generating instruments: he turns into a druid of circuits, conjuring nocturnal scenarios steeped in a future trance aesthetic, as if Lorenzo Senni had been assimilated by a synthetic intelligence. Having abandoned the cathedral of Ostgut Ton, the official label of Berghain, to embrace Smalltown Supersound, the label that has been home to Jaga Jazzist, Kelly Lee Owens and Lindstrøm, this mystic of cerebral chaos sheds his clubber's armor to build a kaleidoscopic horizon, a hypnotic prism where synthesizers stammer broken rhythms over grainy textures and lasersharp basslines.

Through the manipulation of digital instruments, “Stochastic Drift” probes both mathematics and the disorientation of the self, tracing fluid, dreamlike mental trajectories where melodies dissolve into endless regenerations. It's as if an android Mark Fell rediscovered its own organic nature, letting future jazz presences surface (the title track, a lysergic trip of subcutaneous synthesis and liquid variations) alongside ambient caresses that drift between whispered thoughts as an expression of his rediscovered humanity. We're in territory still largely uncharted, and Barker proves he still has constellations left to explore.
