I've always thought that so-called hypnagogic pop is the perfect music for the dog days of summer. For closing your eyes and letting thoughts and memories drift behind eyelids stuck together with sweat. The perfect soundtrack for when dream and reality blur, sun-scorched as in a John Fante story. Far from the maximalist synth baths of chillwave acts like Washed Out and Neon Indian, Chanel Beads' hypna pop formula relies on delicate circular guitar arpeggios, piano echoes and velvety drum machines, as well as processed horns and strings, to build a dreamlike scenario at the crossroads between Brian Wilson and A.R. Kane.
Titled exactly like the band's debut album, this new "Your Day Will Come", starting right from the repetition of the title, seems to want to prolong the wait for that fateful day to arrive. Grief, memory, uncertainty as a permanent condition are indeed, once again, the essence of the thoughts that Shane Lavers lets drift through a liquid, enveloping musical space, one that also absorbs environmental elements like ringing phones and voicemail messages.
In this musical half-sleep, obsessive, bittersweet refrains come to life ("Song For The Messenger", "The Coward Forgets His Nightmare"), wishes entrusted to a bonfire are remembered ("JBL In The Fireplace"), and love is celebrated as the one saving grace.
Even though the album's second half proves less compelling than the first, with a tendency to leave ideas merely sketched out rather than fully developed as happens in the opening tracks, this second "Your Day Will Come" confirms and improves on everything Chanel Beads showed us with their debut. Anyone who finds comfort in blurry, melancholic musical universes will certainly find the New York trio an unmissable band.
