TEODIOTEODIO - Echaremos el cielo abajo a patadas

2026 (Self-released)
post-hardcore, post-rock

It's highly unlikely that the Chilean band teodioteodio have ever come across our own Massimo Volume, but if there's one band they truly resemble, it's precisely the Bologna outfit led by Emidio Clementi. That's true of the music, a post-rock that's skeletal in the verses but ready to suddenly flare up, and it's also true of the poetic, existentialist spoken word. Of course, there are plenty of differences too, starting with the sound itself, which in the case of this new sensation of the Chilean alternative scene is far more ramshackle and grainy. Still, it's a comparison worth making, one that might well spark some interest in this young Santiago collective.

“Echaremos el cielo abajo a patadas”, we'll kick the sky down. It's an imaginative, powerful title, the one teodioteodio have chosen for their debut full-length. And their music is every bit as powerful. Built on a charge that starts out latent, in the scratchy post-hardcore arpeggios of tracks like “Lejos de México” and “Pantera”, before frequently detonating into mighty blasts of noise and feedback. “Amar” is by far the most stunning explosion, its sudden eruption channelling all the energy unleashed by the tectonic bass that runs through the verses.

Theatrical, disjointed, raw, nervy, Felipe Baraona's spoken word prowls through this treacherous musical landscape like an animal fleeing a fire. The vocalist often draws on the words of the greats of Latin American poetry (Bolaño, Borges, Uribe, Pizarnik), playing with them, using them as fertile ground from which to grow new, evocative images. Another arrow in the band's quiver is their creative, versatile use of backing vocals which, ranging from dazed choruses to jazzy phrasing to piercing screams, adds further emotional depth to the sound.

The names worth noting from the so-called nueva escena chilena are by now numerous and thoroughly compelling, ranging from Candelabro to Asia Menor, from Todos mis amigos están tristes to Tus amigos nuevos. teodioteodio, however, boasting an impact that fears no rivals, seem to have that extra gear, and could well turn out to be the flagship name of this new, prolific scene.
